Orchidia Town. It was the last place Nova wanted to be but she had no choice. Duty called as the Rune Knights had assigned her to this new location. A once prosperous city in the North had now become dangerous territory. Various criminals had taken over the town and used it for their shady dealings and businesses. Even the guild in the town, Sleeping Calamity was known for stirring up trouble every now and then. Though she couldn't stop it all by herself, she could at least lessen the burden of the citizens here by stopping small criminals.

Nova was currently on patrol by herself in Orchidia Streets. She wore her purple kimono and had her Rune Knight badge handing on the right side of it for everyone to see. This way she hoped to deter any criminals that were having any thoughts of committing a crime that day. It was about mid day and she had been at it for a few hours so she stopped by a stall to grab some water. As she bought it, she heard a crowd start to cheer. She walked over and worked her way to the front to see a man with three cups in front of him.

"Come one come call. 10,000 jewels for one try. Guess which cup the ball is in and win this golden bracelet. Retail value at 2 million jewels! Try your luck today." The man held the bracelet in the air as the gold shined in the sunlight. People lined up to play as he shuffled a ball in the three cups. One after one they lost. Still, the crowd cheering gave them hope to keep on playing. Nova kept her eye on the man maneuvering the cups to see if anything was going on. All the while leaning over to talk to the people in the crowd. "They don't think they are actually going to win this do they?"

Orchida. Jikan's little home. Filled with the faces and bodies of people ptesent long before her and Sleeping Calamity shower up. The isolated independent town faced many dark makes and guilds forming in the town before, and the random mercabry group, and the random. Trouble makers. It was nothing new for them. The citizens felt like they knew how to handle themselves, with or without the small presence of Rune Knights that had always been stationed in their region. Their guards cycled in and out, and did what they could. But for the most part, the town fended for themselves.

Either way when the storm came thag was the battle between Sleeping Calamity found and a higher group of Rune  Knights. Chaos and destruction ensued. The unknown and unexpected wave of destruction that was mother nature was enough, but he onslaught of combat between the groups caused further damage. It was a good thing people left because of nature, but when they came back home the town was in far worse state than just anything a storm or flood could do.

Many did not return, nor at first. Slowly over time though when Sleeping Calamity build their building and began to rebuild the surround areas, more and more people came. At first it was just the founders, or founder to say more accurate. Jikan. She had returned after breaking out of jail, but it seemed the others went their own ways.

Jikan found herself picking up the pieces, and keeping a low head to the ground.  Through time, combat, and influence, she faced the many low level underworld beings that pushed into the town and tired to move in after her. She set the hierarchy, with her at the top. As long as she was there as the founder, the criminals would obey her rules. Some crimes where not allowed and other crimes would be done under the shadow of the light and in the night. Ideally not traceable, small crimes, or crimes that had a profit that would have the stains possibly be washed in time and effort.

But two general things were clear from her form the start. Absolutely no children, and not the town of Orchidia.

So, when she saw card game going off in the middle of the street she thought nothing of it. But as she got closer just walking around doing her patrol of her territory. Well she saw the slight of hand tricks and more importantly...mana.

The man was cheating.

She walked up and tapped the man on the shoulder, a smirk on her face that was a tab bit eerie. The town folks had grown to know this look to be one she used when people were causing trouble for the town's people or were up to no good against Calamity.

"Hello there".

The crowd just scowled at her and then ignored her question. They were too busy cheering on the next person paying for a chance to play the cup game. The man shuffled the cups and that's when Nova noticed it. He used some type of spell and while he shuffled the ball went back into his arm sleeve. After the contestant lost. Another one would step up the stand and pay to play. As the scammer shuffled the cups, a woman put her hand on his shoulder. The mood in the entire crowd seemed to change as they stared at her like they were all in trouble. Nova thought she looked familiar but couldn't put her finger on it.

Nova walked towards her and pulled off her badge. "Nova Kentaurus of the Rune Knights. I'd advise against playing this here ma'am. It looks like he's not playing fair." The crowed realized what she was doing and started to disperse. The fun was over now. Nova turned to the man running the game and scowled at him. "Why don't you tell her what you're actually doing." Regardless of who this woman was, she still wanted to stop this man from scamming people. Hopefully with the two of them, they could blow the scam up in his face.

It had saddened Jikan to do this. She liked to let the random events that occurred in the town around the people, by the people. To normally transpire with no influence by her or Sleeping Calamity. Well besides being the audience to said event or a neutral participant. However, when it came to things such as this where she or others were aware that negative things were being done in their territory to their people and thus indirectly to them. Well, it was a slight that Jikan would not tolerate easily.

Another figure joined Jikan in front of the crowd by the trickster performer. A swung of her arm and a item was revealed. A Rune Knigbg badge.

How troublesome. Jikan. Thought. A Rune Knight was in Orchidia. They had had lower ranked members that were of no notice most of the time, but still. The fact was something to keep aware of. And this was a new person in the area from Jikan's knowledge.

It seemed the lady did not know her. So, Jikan played along. Acting as if she was just a common citizen. "Is that so? What is he doing? I was looking forward to testing my sight in this little game".

The crowd had dispersed by now. Silent as if this was a common thing to not worry or make a scene about. The man shrieked under the scowl. Be it from Jikan's presence, Nova's presence, was yet to be seen.

"I do not have any idea of what you two are talking about".

The woman was disappointed and stated that she wanted to play. Nova was just happy she caught her before anything happened. Despite all of this, the man still was playing dumb. He claimed that he had no clue what they were talking about. Nova reached into her pocket and threw some jewels on the table to cover the entry fee. "Fine then. I'll play." The man was hesitant but he took the jewels and started to shuffle the cups. Nova was on to him at this point. She thought maybe he would not hide it to prove that what he was doing was legit. However, he was greedy and performed the same trick. He partially lifted a cup and the ball was sucked into his sleeve. Nova pointed her finger at his arm and shot a small zap of lightning at him. The ball fell out of his sleeve along with a tool that resembled a bracelet. No doubt it used mana to pull the ball towards it.

Nova picked up the ball from the ground. "I found it. I win." Nova would then walk up him and grab the bag of money he had on the ground. "I'll be returning this to the people. I don't want to see you around here anymore. I have your scent so don't try anything funny." Being a dragon slayer, she could find him if he did come back and try to scam again. The man would apologize to both of them and then run off. Nova turned to the woman to apologize. "Sorry about that. Looks like he was cheating. There were some more games down the road near the rune knight office. I can show you them if you want. I just have to drop this off."

Jikan was not surprised by the man's action. After all, who would admit to committing a crime? Or anything in general when they knew fully well they wee going to get into trouble. Well....the man was going to get into trouble anyway. Whether it was in front of this Rune Knight, in their jail, or out here were Jikan's reach was. He would be getting something either way, one way just had a way of preventing trouble if you denied it maybe and did not get caught with enough evidence to be on trial. However...in Jikan's world, there was only a need for evidence to say you did it. It was a bit different than having to be judged by police or the common people.

Either way, the stupidity of the man made Jikan want to punch him as soon as she saw him in the act. The Female knight, decided to play the game, and he still attempted to do it again. Even if the Knight missed it this time Jikan was still there. Did he really think he could get away that easy? Greed, pride, stuck in a habit. She had no idea. But the man tried his trick, again. And got caught....again.

Once he accepted his fate, a quick short look from Jikan stopped any thoughts of running away. The bag of money was picked up by Nova and she just...let him go? She had his scent so from Jikan's past experiences she must be a dragon slayer.

Oh great....a dragon slayer has my smell...that's worse that a werewolf having your scent....

The man ran away Jikan would decide if she wanted to deal with him later...

But now Jikan had a question and a decision to choose. Would she go on her way now that the scammer was gone? Go after him and deal with it herself by her rules? Or would she go with the Knight? Did the knight really have no idea who they were speaking to? That would...be hard to be. They were in Orchida after all, Sleeping Calamity's area.

So was it a trap? Maybe...walking closer to the knight station could make it easier for them to jump her, but would they endanger the town and people to capture her here? It as not like she had been up to anything recently, at least, anything they could tie anyone to. And with her relationship with the town she doubt many would be happy with them causing her trouble when she had not started anything.

Whether it be boredom or one of Jikan's random actions by randomness. She accepted. "Oh? some more games? Well I am bored...that that man ruined a nice crowd having fun....sure. I'll come along".

"Sounds good to me. I'm Nova by the way if you didn't hear me earlier."

The woman accepted her invitation so they both would walk down the streets together. Luckily, the rune knight office wasn't too far out of the way. It was only a short walk for the two of them. Once they arrived outside the gates, Nova would hand the money to a nearby guard. "Take this inside to holding. Tell them Lieutenant Nova will fill out the report for it later." The perks of getting her new rank. She could move some of her work onto others. The guard would grab it and head inside and Nova would turn back to the woman.

"The work stuff is all done now so we can continue. Sorry I never got your name" Nova was too busy working on the crime she forgot proper etiquette. The woman looked familiar so it would be a relief when she finally could get a name to the face.

Jikan nodded to Nova as she spoke. Jikan had indeed gotten the purple haired lady's name when she came to the scene. There were some sounds and commotion going on but nothing to hinder Jikans's ability to hear someone speak. Nova probably knew she spoke loud enough for her name to be heard, so Jikan assumed the Rune Knight was just being formal, speaking and making sure her new acquaintance got her name. "Yes I got your name. Ms. Nova Kentaurus if I am pronouncing it correctly?".

The two of them were on the move, a few more games went on as they went but nothing to make Jikan think people were cheating. Dice rolls, a few more card stands, one even where one won by hitting an object off of someone head. Overall, it was noisy a little but pleasant. Jikan felt no magic being used so unless people were doing old vanished deception tricks and not being caught, she currently had no idea from the time she took walking while be escorted by Nova.

Arriving outside the gates of their building Jikan watched Nova hand off the bag of coins to a nearby guard. They were assigned with the task of bringing it inside to be ready for recording later. But, that was of a lesser importance. Jikan had learned the rank of the Rune Knight. Not extremely high but enough to be noted in their system. And she had no idea who was with her? This was sounding more and more weird or unlikely by the minute...

Jikan turned, hoping to use the excuse of the games going on in town as a way to get further away from this guard base. "Oh that's right I didn't give mine. Apologies Ms. Nova. My name is Regnah Setolc", Jikan spoke her words calm and smooth. Using a name she used at times when she was out and about trying to play the role of a normal citizen. Fitting in to hear the quiet noises of the people and the shadows within them.

It didn't seem like she needed the reintroduction. The red headed woman remembered it from earlier. "Yes you got right. Nice to meet you Regnah."

Now that she was done with her work it was time to head back out. She had been at it for a while so she decided she could take a break now. Reaching down, she removed her rune knight badge and put it in her pocket. Though she caused a scene earlier, this would help put others who didn't see her more at ease. "Now that the work is done we can get back to the fun. There's a lot more games over her. I'm on break now so I hope you don't mind if I join you. I just got here so I'm still learning about this town."

The two would walk away from the Rune Knight office and back to the streets where the games were setup. There was roulette wheels, card games, dice games, and many others. "Here we are. If you wanted to try anything out go ahead. I'll cheer you on and keep an eye out for anything suspicious of course." Regnah seemed pretty calm after what they had just saw. Nova just assumed if she lived in Orchidia she was probably used to it by now. Hopefully these next games would be legit so the two of them could have a little fun and blow off some steam.

Names where give, the money taken from the people by the scammer was set to be put into filing before being attempted to be returned to its owners. How well that would go or if at all was an unknown factor for Jikan. But, for now it seemed it would end here with her involvement in the matter. Now that it was settled Nova removed her badge, either a sign she was going off duty or an attempt to blend into the people she was going to be around. For the people who did not see her this would work, and maybe even relax the people who were around her if they thought she was off duty. They shouldn't have to worry either way though, if they were not up to any crimes then there was nothing to be worried about when it came to a Rune Knight being around. Well...at least a none corrupt one.

"No that is fine. One can walk wherever they wish after all. If you so happen to choose to go where I go, then I see no issue about it as long as you cause me no harm or trouble. Maybe you'll even learn a little bit about the town and its people as well".

The two of them walked away from the Rune Knight office and back to the streets where the games were setup. The number of games somehow expanded in the time they were away. Or maybe that was just Jikan's imagination? She eyed the games, dice, wheels, cards, and a few other random ones she did not know. She went up to the dice game to roll before before doing so she would speak to Nova once again. "Oh come now. You can't bond with the people and enjoy your break if you're always watching so intensely. I know it is your duty but you can multitask a little can't you?".

Jikan's calmness was indeed maybe something to be noted. But, as many people in the town would say, they seen a lot and handled a lot. A simple card scam and a Rune Knight showing up was nothing to be shocked about. It was not as if a dragon came or a massive attack happened.

Either way, that was the way it was for them. And with Jikan's upbringing and life so far, she blened in pretty well to that reality.

Regnah had a good point. This was a new town and she had to mingle with the people a little. If she kept hounding them by giving them the death stare at every game, she would be hated fast. Regnah suggested that she play the games with them. She wasn't much of a gambler but there was a first time for everything. She decided she would just scan the games and find one that would be easy for her. She found one where a man spun a marble in bowl and it would land in one of eight areas. Each area had a a notch where the marble could land and had a color associated with it.

Walking up to the game, Nova paid the entry fee of 5000 jewels. If you got the call right, you won 20,000 jewels. "I'll go purple" She figured the same as her eyes and hair it would bring her good luck. The man would thank her and spin the marble in the bowl. Round and round it went and she didn't see anything suspicious. As the marble came to a stop, it landed in green.

"Oh sorry little lady but that's a loss. But don't give up you can still double your money!" He would egg her on and she would try again. She was sticking with her guns and picked purple. The marble spun but this time it landed on red. Another loss. Nova turned to Regnah. "I'm no good at this. Why don't you give it a shot. I'll pay for the first one." Nova handed her over the entry fee and would watch if she decided to play.

Jikan looked about the area, there were many places to possibly go, so many possible places to be at. The numerous games, the sounds, the faces. It was a nice thing to see in the town. It proved that people could be happy and at peace even with a dark guild over them. It just mattered to how the interaction between the guild and the people in the town went.

Jikan herself was not a gambler as well. But, she still dabbled in the activity from time to time. It was a simple thing that occurred often enough within the guild members and to a lesser extent, maybe even the same, with the town's folk in their taverns and inns. It was a game to play to use some extra time, and she found often enough that her presence there, even f she was not playing, caused any hostile interactions to stop or not escalated to a worrisome level.

Scanning the area more together, Jikan eventually took Nova's lead when she found a game stand that drew in her attention. It was one where a man spun a marble in bowl and it would land in one of eight areas. Each area had a a notch where the marble could land and had a color associated with it. Jikan accompanied Nova and played the game. Paying 10000 jewels to play two games. Calling purple first and then red. The chose was funny, as the first was Nova's hair color and the second was the primary color of Jikan's hair. Sadly, both spins failed.

From what Jikan could see and sense, it was a fair game. No trick were used magic or not. It was just chance here that both spins proved to be fruitless.

"Oh why thank you, you did not have to pay for me to try", she said as she reached out and took the money into her hand.

"So, do you care to play miss-?", started the man.

"Regnah", she spoke, soft light and calm, timing it all to make it seem the man was asking for her name. She did a little curtsy playing the formal act. "It is a pleasure to meet you. Oh, and her name is Nova", she pointed over to the purple haired lady. "And well....I suppose so. Given that she offered to take care of my cost". She stepped up to the stand, "I will play on red", she said handing the man the donated money given to her. With a nod of understanding, the man took the money before spinning the marble in the bowl. Around and around it went. Before clinking and clacking and landing on the color blue.

Damn. Even Regnah couldn't get any luck with the marble landing in the right spot. However, Nova was at least happy to see that this man was playing legit. There were no tricks that she saw with her eye. Even though she was told to relax, it was just her instinct after being in the police force and the rune knights for such a long period of time. Right now she was down 15,000J. One from the two spins that she did, and the other from Regnah's spin. If she won this time, she could at least get her money recovered. Nova gave it one last shot.

"I'll do one more spin. I'll go white this time" She would say handing in the money over. The man dropped the marble in and round and round it went. Nova got excited when she saw it start to bounce on the notches and slow down. On the last bounce it hung on the end of a notch and then tilted over to land in the white section of the board. "YES" Nova said as she did a small fist pump in victory. She wasn't much of a gambler so it was fun to win for once. She got the money and then would turn over to Regnah. "Not bad huh? I guess third time is the charm So you want to keep going or check something else out?"

Jkan failed the game, but that was fine with her. It was a game after all and more even so, the money that was used to bet was not even hers. And. She did not have to pay it back or worry about a possible threat to her about the person wanting it paid back. Jikan was just content that the game was not being rigged. The odds were placed against whoever decided to play as is already. There was no need for any dirty tricks for something so small and meaningless as a simple game.

Still, looking at Nova. Jikan could assume that the women would want to get her money back. All of it preferably, but at least half most likely. Something. She watched as the purple haired woman played once again. The ball making a clicking sound as it dance and rolled within the confides of the spinning wheel. "Good luck".

Around and around it went, hoping to land on white. It bounced and played a game if it will if it will not before tilting. It landed on white. A satisfied nod came onto Jikan's face. "No not bad at all. I think i will call it quits on this game though". She turned around, scanning the field around her as she thought about the games. Her eyes stopped at a dart game, a simple one where balloons and targets seemed to be the goal. "What about that one??", she said pointing at the game stand.

Regnah was right. It was good to quit while you were ahead and they had already spun four times on this particular game. The money was already recouped as well. Nova would thank the merchant and they would move onto the next one. This time Regnah had the honor of selecting the specific game. Hopefully being a citizen of the town she could spot an easy one for them to play. Nova wanted to continue with the hot streak that she had right now.

The game that she selected was a dart game with balloons. It seemed simple enough and there wasn't much room for cheating in this type of game. Just a sharp dart hits a balloon and boom you win. There also was an option to play against an opponent which rewarded a prize as well. This way the two of them could play. "This will be fun. We can compete against each other. Let's give it a shot" Nova covered the entry fee again and they were both handed darts. It was the first one to pop 10 balloon first would win.

Looking at the game she had selected, Jikan examined the targets with her eyes as she moved closer. Circular targets and balloons targets were in amass on the wall. A rainbow of colors were visible, and the size of the balloons held many variations to them. It was a game Jikan hoped would prove to be the same as the other, a simple game to play that held no cheating to it. "Okay, I will take your challenge. Let's have some fun".


Jikan walked up to the stand, moving her red hair to the side behind her ears to get them out of the way. She picked up one of many darts and laid them out in her hand. "I guess I go first?". She turned to get a response from Nova, once she got the go ahead Jikan wold go one by one, throwing the darts in her hand until all of them were used for her ten attempts.

Regnah accepted her challenge and went up to the starting line to throw her darts. She was good. Damn good. All 10 balloons were done with only 10 darts. It was a perfect score. Nova just shook her head and walked up as it was her turn now. She picked up the darts and would aim them as the man setup the new stand with the balloons. Once it was ready she threw them. The first five were easy but on the sixth attempt she throw it too hard that her accuracy suffered. It missed to the left which made her lose. She never was really good with darts. Still, she swallowed her pride and kept throwing until she popped all 10. It took more attempts but she at least got them all.

Nova turned to Regnah and admitted defeat. "Dang you're pretty good at this. You got me. Let's see what you win. It looks like they had some options." The stand owner pointed to the board and saw that she could win anything from her money back, a free game, a stuffed animal, and many more options. Nova was curious to see what she would go with.

Truth be told, Jikan was surprised she had managed to hit all ten balloons in one go. She felt she got lucky as she did not consider her self beyond normal or average when it came to her aim. Granted, she still felt a bit of pride in her success in the game, no matter how little that pride increase was. She still knew it was a game, and one that she did not even come in with a competitive attitude with against Nova, neither was it shared to her. All in all it was a relaxing peaceful interaction so far.

Sure, it was under disguise of a false name that likely would make the lady made at Jikan, even more so with the reputations and 'crimes' attached to her name. Come to think if it had Jikan even committed a crime? A thought for later. Cause for now she was Regnah, and Regnah had no crimes to her name or things to worry about.

"Thank you thank you. But honestly I think I just had a good round. I don't really have much experience playing this game, and my aim is no different from anyone else", Jikan turned towards the store owner after speaking to Nova. Looking at the options Nova was right, there were a few things to pick from. Jikan could choose to get her money back, which, maybe was an option. But she preferred to not have the owner lose money. He shouldn't have to rely on people losing to make a profit, that only motivated for him to cheat to make something. So she would not pick that.

She would then look at her other options. There was a stuff animal option, plenty of them were cute but, Jikan was not really the one to want to just get one for herself, and her adopted kids were far too old for such a gift, perhaps a game? It could be fun for one of them or both, she looked further and saw a basket. It was an assortment of some minor things with one of them inside being a gift card and discount at a local store.

Decisions decisions.

"I will take that game please", Jikan said deciding on her reward and pointing at it with a finger. Nodding the store owner simple turned around and pluck the prize off of the wall, putting it inside of a small bag before handing it to Jikan. "Should we try again or do you wish to do something else?".

Regnah was being pretty humble about herself but Nova encouraged her. A win was a win. You had to celebrate it even if it was a small one. "Nah you're just that good." she laughed and patted her on the back to congratulate her. Now it was time to pick out a gift. Nova thought for sure she would get the cash back since she seemed older and money could buy anything but she actually went with a game. Perhaps she had others to play it with later and it was more valuable then the cash they used to enter.

Now that it was done, it was the matter of what to do next. Truth be told, Nova was getting pretty tired of the street games. The rest of the stalls looked legit and she didn't think she would get a bust like she did earlier. They both had won once so it was a good time to stop. "I think I'm good to call it quits for now. I'm still new to town so do you got any recommendations on sites to see? The places I read about were the church, markets, and Sleeping Calamity Guild hall." If Regnah was willing to show her around, Nova could get a better lay of the land when she was here.
