"Well..." Abel's eyes shifted slightly at how she worded it, as though he was presented with a buzzkill. "I suppose that's a little bit less fun, but fair." While it was clear Atani was not stuck up by any means she seemingly did not have the same chaotic energy Abel had - perhaps that was for the better though. Weird ideas were often best balanced by those who had normal ideas. He laughed a little at her question of his. "Tell you about myself? Hah, this is seeming more and more like a typical date every minute." He had hoped at least that would get a rise out of her, perhaps even earning the "it's a business date!" answer that he was trying to bait out of the girl.
Still though, his fixation on Atani aside, this was a subject that he was rather passionate about. He had told the story to quite a few people now, each time a little different. Abel's face became a bit more serious, his voice dropping from its usual excitable tone. "My parents were a couple of criminals, you see. I mean that literally - both of them swindlers, goin' around from inn to tavern trying to make everyone believe in some story. Sometimes sympathetic, sometimes heroic. Whatever they felt could get people to waste their money on. Sometimes schemes went way bigger than that.
" Abel leaned forward and rested his arms onto his knees, both feet now on the ground. He stared up at the holy symbol in the center of the building. "Couldn't abide by that. Had an argument with them about how they were ruining some people's lives. It ended with me running off, searching for a way to make up for what my parents did. So, I joined the Rune Knights. Not 'cause I care about the law or anything, just because I wanna do the right thing. Have the power to do the right thing. Even if I often disagree with my superiors about it..." He let out a sigh, as though he was exhaling years of stress. He decided to leave out the details about his next encounter with his parents - he would tell Atani that later, hopefully in a more private setting. Assuming this went as he planned.
He turned to face her once again, trying to switch back to his earlier casual position. "So what's the next question?" Abel's tone was back to how it was normally now. "Maybe something a little more exciting. Go on!"
