Chapter I: Prologue

In the dimly lit confines of a secluded room, a lone figure sits a weathered chair, shrouded in darkness. Only the brief flickers of the lamp at the far side of the room dimly illuminates the area around it. The room is enveloped in a somber silence, broken only by the steady ticks of the vintage clock, its rhythmic ticking booming through the air.

The man, his features obscured by the shadows, sits motionless, his gaze fixed upon the emptiness before him. With listless movements, he swirls the contents of a half-empty glass, the amber liquid casting a faint glow against his hand. The scent of alcohol hung heavy in the air as the man gave off a deep sigh.

As if compelled by an unseen force, he slowly rises from his seat, the creaking of the floorboards echoing through the stillness. With slow and methodical steps, he moves down the hall, his path illuminated by the faint gleams of light filtering through the windows. His movements are mechanical and his gaze fixated ahead. At length, he reaches a door, its surface worn with age and neglect. Hesitantly, he pushes it open, the hinges creaking as he does so.

As he steps into the room, a wave of nostalgia washes over him as he takes in the familiar sights of his childhood home. The once overpowering scent of alcohol has disappeared, replaced by the comforting aroma of his mother's home cooking mingling with the fresh smells of nature drifting in from an open window. His gaze sweeps across the room, recognizing the old furniture and cherished mementos, before finally coming to rest upon the figure peacefully nestled on the bed.

A rush of emotions flood his heart as a soft smile tugs at the corners of his lips. With each step closer to the bed, his heartbeat intensifies. It is his beloved wife, Nesiara, who lies there sleeping on her side. Her form is delicately outlined beneath a thin blue sheet. Nesiara sleeps soundly, her silhouette adorned with the undeniable evidence of impending motherhood. The gentle rise and fall of her breathing are accompanied by the subtle movements of her hand, instinctively cradling their unborn child within.

As he tenderly rests his hand on her rounded stomach, excitement spreads throughout his body, eager to connect with the life within. But instead of the anticipated warmth of his unborn child, his palm encounters an unexpected searing heat. Shock jolts through him as the serene ambiance around them slowly turns into something out of a nightmare. Flames dance wildly, devouring everything in their path, transforming the tranquil space into a grotesque inferno. The aroma of home-cooked meals and the fragrance of flowers are obliterated by the foul stench of charred debris and pillowing smoke.

Panic rips at his throat as he frantically lunges to douse the flames, driven by a primal instinct to shield his beloved wife and their unborn child from the approaching flames. Yet, his futile efforts are thwarted when his wife, now awakened from her slumber, stops his hand with a grip that freezes him in place. Her voice, now deep and hollow, drips with accusation as her flesh begins to liquefy, revealing a hauntingly skeletal glare beneath. "You. Have. Failed. Us," she accuses, each word a dagger plunging into his heart.

Tsukishima stirs from his slumber, his body damp with sweat. Blinking away the remnants of sleep, he finds himself once more within the dim confines of the inn where he'd slept for the night. With a sigh, he runs a hand across his forehead, the thin line of sweat clinging to his skin. "That dream again…" His voice is a low murmur, laced with the memories that refuse to fade. Though it has been years since he lost his family and his village, the guilt of that tragedy still weighed on him as if it happened yesterday.

The pact he had forged, the pact that had granted him his newfound powers—it's no mere coincidence, he knows that the nightmares began to occur almost nightly after he had embraced this ‘alliance’ with the demon king. There's a bitter irony in the exchange: power in exchange for peace of mind, a bargain struck with forces beyond comprehension.

"When will you let go of the past and accept your future?" The voice cuts through the silence like a blade, its origin unmistakable. "Get out of my head," Tsukishima mutters, the frustration evident in his tone. "Watch your tone, subject," the voice retorts, a hint of anger seeping into its retort. "You forget who you speak to. I am Bael, The King of Demons, and you will remember your place."

"I'm fully aware of who you are and what you have done for me," Tsukishima replies, his voice tinged with bitterness. "You want your nightmares to end? Then embrace the power I’ve bestowed upon you. Begin the campaign to expand my rule. Do so and you will be rewarded with power, more power than you had previously. The power to dominate those you seek.” The voice chuckled darkly, its echoes reverberating through the confines of Tsukishima’s mind before fading into the recesses of his consciousness, leaving Tsukishima alone once more with his thoughts.

Power…” he says, enticed by the thought. The power to avenge his family and to eventually overtake the King himself. He shakes his head for a moment, somewhat startled by the thought. It was yet another caveat of accepting the power the demon king offered and yet, something he was beginning to mind less and less as time went on. With a heavy sigh, Tsukishima rises from the bed, his movements sluggish with exhaustion as he makes his way toward the bathroom. The cool touch of water against his skin offers a momentary relief. Before long, Tsukishima exits the room and steps outside, eager to see what today would bring.

Chapter II: Training Day

"Why am I out here?" Tsukishima muttered aloud. He stood in a dense forest nestled within the mountains, the Rune Knights Headquarters visible in the far distance. A massive silhouette against the early morning sky. The first rays of sunlight began to peak over the horizon, casting a glow over the landscape. "I told you. It’s time to put my plan into motion," the voice responded within his mind, its tone authoritative and cryptic.

Tsukishima sighed in exasperation. "Yet you never mentioned what that plan was," he retorted. To anyone else, he appeared to be talking to himself. In reality, however, he was conversing with Bael, the King of the Demons. "You'll learn the full scope of my plan soon. But first, we need to prepare," Bael's voice echoed in his mind. "As you are now, you are weak. You are a shell of your former self."

The words stung, a painful reminder of everything Tsukishima had lost over the years—his village, his powers, his family. His heart ached with the weight of those memories and the burden he carried.

"However," Bael continued, his tone shifting to one of determination, "it is time I teach you how to utilize my power. The power to summon my army." Tsukishima's eyes widened at the implication. He’d heard the stories of the Demon King’s army. A demonic horde who were renowned for their brutality and all wanting to achieve their master’s goal of ruling demon kind. This was one of the reasons he sought out the power for himself. Summoning Bael's army would mean wielding unimaginable power and Tsukishima wondered just what it would do to him were he to fully grasp that power.

He clenched his fists, feeling the resolve harden within him. "Alright, Bael. Show me what I need to do." A sinister chuckle resonated in his mind. "Very well. First and foremost, you will need to focus on your mana. As you were once proficient in magic, this part should be easy.

Tsukishima closed his eyes and took a deep breath, feeling the air fill his lungs and then slowly release. He focused on the sensation, the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest. At first, his thoughts began to intrude as they often did. Snippets of conversations, former quests, random images of his village and of his family flitted through his mind like restless butterflies. He acknowledged each one and let them pass as quickly as they came.

Gradually, the chatter in his mind began to quiet. He visualized a small body of water akin to a pond, its surface perfectly still. He felt himself sinking deeper into a state of calm, the noise of the world fading into a distant hum. In this serene space, Tsukishima focused on a single point of light within his mind. It was warm and inviting, a beacon of tranquility. He quickly deduced that this single point of light was representative of his mana. Once overflowing with energy now reduced to a small, fluttering speck. He imagined this light growing, enveloping his entire being and returning to its former stature. With each subsequent breath he took in, the light began to shine brighter and brighter. With each exhale, it pushed away the remaining fragments of stress and tension.

As the Athlas elf continued to channel his mana, Bael observed with silent approval. It was evident that Tsukishima possessed an extraordinary talent, a prodigy among his kind. Only such exceptional individuals could even hope to wield Bael’s power. The demon king contemplated the potential that lay within Tsukishima, pondering if this unlikely alliance could indeed serve his grand designs.

As the flow of mana intensified within Tsukishima, Bael deemed it appropriate to initiate the next step in harnessing his newfound power. "Excellent. Now, it is time to proceed with materialization," Bael declared, his voice resonating with authority. "Given your past proficiency with caster magic, this phase should not be unfamiliar to you. Extend your mana outward, projecting it into the fabric of reality. If executed correctly, you shall manifest a portal through which my demonic legions can enter this realm."

Bael paused momentarily, his ethereal gaze fixed upon Tsukishima. "Your mana reservoir is currently small, but it shall suffice for our immediate needs. You will not be able to summon my esteemed generals at the present time, but you possess just enough power to conjure forth an entity of immense value to our cause, Lucian.

Allowing his instincts to guide him, Tsukishima surrenders control to his body, lifting his hand in a silent gesture while projecting his mana forward. True to the Demon King’s word, a light gray portal materializes before him, pulsating with crimson streaks of energy and reminiscent of crackling lightning. The elf's eyes widen in astonishment at the manifestation. Before Tsukishima can fully grasp the gravity of the moment, Bael's commanding voice slices through the air. "Speak his name and awaken my legion!" Bael's words echo with urgency and authority, prompting Tsukishima to act without hesitation. "Awaken, Lucian." he says, his voice carrying a resonance that seems to infuse the very fabric of reality.

As Tsukishima utters the summoning, the portal darkens, its edges tinged with an ominous hue as a figure materializes from within. Lucian steps forth, an imposing presence with jet-black hair streaked with hues of crimson and gold. Clad in attire befitting a noble butler, his demeanor exudes an air of unwavering loyalty. With the completion of Lucian’s emergence, the portal dissipates into the ether, leaving the demonic being to stand before Tsukishima with a graceful bow. "Milord, how may I be of service to you?" Lucian's voice booms.

"Lucian is the head butler of my empire," Bael proclaimed with a sense of authority. "As will all of my legions, he shall serve and regard you with the same authority as they would me." "Interesting," Tsukishima muttered. The overwhelming power coursing through him was intoxicating, its allure threatening to consume him. He could sense the tendrils of Bael's influence weaving their way into his consciousness, gradually mixing his desires with those of the demon king. It was a dangerous scenario, one that threatened to blur the lines between the two.

Aware of the subtle shifts occurring within Tsukishima's psyche, Bael chuckled. "Will I be able to summon you?" Tsukishima inquired. "No," Bael replied curtly, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. The elf noted the swiftness of the demon king's response and became intrigued at the reason behind it. However, he chose to set aside his concerns for the time being, opting instead to focus on the task at hand. It would come up again eventually. "Fine. Then do you care to tell me about your plan?" Tsukishima pressed.

Bael's response was measured and full of purpose. "It is simple. You are not the first to wield my power," he began, his voice echoing with the weight of centuries past. "My ambition is to rule over Earthland, but I require a proxy to achieve such dominion. My initial attempt at conquest was crude and brutish, relying solely on the subjugation of all life through sheer force. Power. However, I underestimated the resilience of Earthland's inhabitants. That is a mistake I shall not repeat," Bael declared angrily. "Hence, I sought an alternative approach—a method not of ruling through sheer power, but through the subtler mechanisms of worship and control. And what better vehicle for such influence than the Magic Council?" The realization dawned upon Tsukishima with startling clarity, his eyes widening in disbelief. "That's why you prevented me from finishing off Kyle. You want me to join the Rune Knights," he surmised, connecting the dots to the beginnings of Bael's elaborate scheme.

"Go forth and lay the groundwork for my ascension," Bael commanded, his voice resonating with an otherworldly power before fading into silence. Tsukishima sighed wearily, his gaze shifting toward Lucian, who remained in a deep bow. "Rise, Lucian. It is time to depart," he declared. "As you wish. Where are we headed, milord?" Lucian inquired. Tsukishima's gaze drifted towards the distant silhouette of the Rune Knights headquarters, a prelude of the trials that lay ahead. "We are going to begin the plan," he stated as he headed out on the path laid before him.

Chapter III: What am I?

As Tsukishima barged into his dimly lit room at the inn, the door slammed behind him with a resounding echo, his frustration and torment clearly apparent. The pain that had been gnawing at him grew more intense, each moment feeling like an eternity as his very flesh betrayed him. With a sickening sensation, he noticed more of his skin peeling away, revealing the bone beneath, a grotesque display of decay.

"Speak! What is wrong with me?" His voice reverberated off the walls, filled with desperation and anger, demanding answers from the knowing Demon King. Yet, only silence greeted him, a silence that seemed to mock his suffering. He paced back and forth, the only sound his own footsteps against the wooden floorboards. Suddenly, his frantic movements came to an abrupt halt as a chunk of skin detached from his face, landing on the ground with a nauseating squelch. A gruesome sight.

"Answer me, damn it!" His voice cracked with desperation, echoing in the confined space of the room. But still, there was no response, only the oppressive silence that seemed to suffocate him. In the darkness of his room, Tsukishima grappled with his own mortality, his cries falling on deaf ears as he confronted the terrifying reality in front of him.

In an instant, a swirling gray portal materialized before Tsukishima, pulsating with crimson energy that crackled and danced around its edges. This portal seemed to exude a greater intensity than any Tsukishima had produced before, the very air vibrating with its power. From within the portal emerged a figure, their back turned to Tsukishima. Yet, even before the figure turned, Tsukishima's keen senses and familiarity easily allowed him to identify the figure as Lucian.

"Why have you come, Lucian? I did not summon you," Tsukishima questioned, his voice tinged with both curiosity and the pain that wracked his body. As the portal dissipated, Lucian turned to face his master, but something was amiss. Tsukishima's eyes widened as he glanced at Lucian's visage, his eyes consumed by a seemingly never ending darkness.

"What in the world..." Tsukishima's words trailed off, realization dawning upon him that this encounter was far from ordinary. "Curious indeed," came the response, but the voice that echoed was not Lucian's familiar tone. It was a voice Tsukishima recognized all too well – the voice of Bael.

"I desired to gaze upon this transformation first hand, so I have taken temporary residence within Lucian's form. It is but the highest honor for my servants," Bael declared, his commanding presence unsettling. Tsukishima stood with his senses on edge, grappling with the implications of Bael's unexpected presence.

With a defiant edge to his tone, Tsukishima broke the tense silence. "Then answer me plainly. What the hell is going on with me?" His words were a challenge, a demand for clarity. Bael merely clasped his hands behind his back, a gesture of calm authority, and began to pace methodically, his steps echoing in the confined space. It was a rare moment for Bael to tread upon the earthen realm, if only temporarily, relishing in the sensation.

"Do you remember when you first spoke to me? The day you wished for my power?" Bael's question hung in the air, a reminder of the moment in Tsukishima's past.

t was the lowest point of the elf's existence, a moment where the weight of survivor's guilt threatened to engulf him entirely. Despite the pain that gripped him, Tsukishima remained silent, his gaze fixed upon Bael, silently urging him to continue, to shed light on the situation.

"While you possessed strength and your ambitions aligned with my own, I came to a realization," Bael continued, his voice resonating with a chilling clarity. "Your mortal vessel, as it stands, could not contain the full scope of my power. You would be limited, unable to harness its true potential. Inevitably, you would succumb to the same fate as those who came before you. Death. So, why not use that to my advantage? And the best way to do so would be…"

The revelation hung heavy in the air, casting a pall over the dimly lit chamber. Tsukishima's lips parted, a realization dawning upon him like a bolt from the blue. "A lich," he interjected, his voice laced with a mixture of comprehension and disbelief. Suddenly, the pieces of the puzzle fell into place, memories of the arcane ritual flooding his mind. He recalled the gnawing sense of unease that had plagued him during the ritual, a fleeting intuition that something was wrong. Yet, in his pursuit of power and fulfillment, he had turned a blind eye to the ominous portents that lurked beneath the surface.

"Indeed," Bael confirmed as he extended his hand, revealing a small object adorned with intricate demonic runes. The object, a phylactery, exuded an ominous aura, its surface pulsating with swirling masses of gray and violet energy. It was a vessel, a conduit through which Tsukishima's essence was tethered to the mortal realm, a fragile barrier between humanity and the unknown.

"The phylactery," Bael continued. "It serves as the linchpin, the sole bastion guarding against your descent into soulless oblivion. Though even in the event of its destruction would you not truly die. This is because you’ve evolved into something more. Something…greater. Truly, a marvelous birth. Alas, this was not meant to transpire so soon. My intention was for the transformation to unfold gradually, affording us the opportunity to maneuver within the shadows, to infiltrate the ranks of the Rune Knights and sow the seeds of our influence. Alas, circumstances have dictated otherwise."

Tsukishima's gaze drifted towards a nearby mirror, his reflection a haunting testament to the irreversible transformation that now gripped him. His flesh withered and decayed, the tendrils of corruption snaking their way across his skeletal form. The once-pervasive agony had endured was replaced by an unsettling emptiness that consumed his being. Fear and panic had long since deserted him, replaced by a profound sense of resignation, an acceptance of his grim fate.

As the final vestiges of flesh rotted away, Tsukishima stood revealed in his skeletal form, his bones gleaming in the dim light of the chamber. With a flick of his fingers, Bael conjured forth a tattered dark coat, its fabric crackling with latent magical energy. He presented the garment to Tsukishima with a gesture no doubt influenced by Lucian. "A gift to commemorate your ascension," Bael said solemnly, his words echoing in the silence of the chamber. The coat, infused with ancient demonic enchantments, seemed to pulse with a life of its own as Tsukishima accepted it, draping it over his skeletal frame. It was a token of recognition, a symbol of his newfound status as a lich.

"So what now?" Tsukishima's voice emerged as an echo of his former self, devoid of the emotions that once defined him. His skeletal form stood stoic. "I'm sure I'll attract quite a bit of attention if I venture out like this," Tsukishima remarked. "Focus your mind," Bael instructed, his voice a whisper in the void. "Envision your original form. Let the mana flow through you."

Tsukishima obeyed as he allowed the mana around him to envelop him in their embrace. A surge of power washed over him, a tide of mana reshaping his very essence. And then he looked upon his original appearance reflected in the mirror before him. It was a mere illusion, a disguise woven from the fabric of his own thoughts, but it served its purpose.

"It's a disguise," Bael explained. "A facade to navigate through society. It will suffice for most, but there will always be those who see beyond the veil. You possess additional powers, ones that will reveal themselves in due time. But for now, our path leads to the country of Seven. There, we shall embark upon the next phase of our plan." A thunderous boom reverberated through the room as Lucian's eyes returned to their natural hue, signaling Bael's departure. "Congratulations on your ascension, my lord," Lucian remarked, bowing low before his master. "Rise, Lucian," Tsukishima commanded, his voice imbued with newfound authority. "It is time to depart to the country of Seven."
