Tsukishima Higurashi
As dusk blanketed Magnolia, Tsukishima slipped into the city with a hunger gnawing at him, a feeling he'd almost forgotten. The warm, heady scent of roasted meats and spiced bread drifted from open windows and market stalls, teasing him in a way he hadn’t experienced in years. It was strange to feel such a primal urge again, a hunger that clawed at his newly restored flesh, reminding him of his mortality with every pang. Becoming flesh and blood once more had brought unexpected challenges, the constant hum of needs he had long since forgotten pressing on him like an unending tide.

With no coin to his name and his stomach growling in protest, Tsukishima’s keen gaze scanned the bustling marketplace for any opportunity that might remedy his situation. Magnolia’s merchants prided themselves on their goods, each shop a vibrant oasis of color and sound, offering exotic trinkets, fine silks, and fragrant delicacies from across Fiore. Yet he knew he could not indulge, and a flicker of irritation crossed his mind. Lich-like immortality had come with certain freedoms, freedom from the petty demands of the body, for one, but it also lacked the simple pleasures of life, pleasures that now seemed agonizingly close yet out of reach.

Amidst the rows of shops, a small bulletin board tacked with notices caught his eye. One of the postings stood out: a plea from a coalition of shop owners in desperate need of a protector. Tsukishima’s curiosity piqued, and he moved closer to read the details. A group of thugs had been terrorizing the merchants for months, demanding payments under the guise of “protection.” The shop owners had finally drawn a line in the sand, refusing to pay any longer and seeking someone who could stand against the threat.

The job promised payment upfront, a prospect Tsukishima couldn’t afford to ignore. The merchants were likely unaware of his history or his abilities, but they would soon find out they had hired someone far more capable than the average sellsword. A small, dark smile crossed his face as he glanced back at the marketplace, already imagining the fear that would replace the smug confidence of the so-called enforcers. It was the perfect opportunity to test what this new body of his could accomplish. Hunger was indeed a powerful motivator, and tonight, he would satiate more than one hunger in Magnolia’s shadowed streets.

Under the cover of darkness, Tsukishima slipped into one of Magnolia’s quieter, more obscure shops; a modest establishment that specializes in exotic charms, mystical trinkets, and talismans whispered to hold ancient magic. The scent of incense drifted through the air, mingling with the metallic tang of enchanted artifacts. Shelves crammed together rose to the ceiling, casting thick shadows that twisted and stretched with each flicker of candlelight, their forms shifting like silent, watchful sentinels. Moving with practiced stealth, Tsukishima weaved through the narrow rows until he reached a secluded corner at the back of the shop, where shadows pooled in thick layers. There, he settled in, becoming a mere wraith within the darkness, awaiting his prey.

As the minutes stretched on, he sharpened his senses, listening to the soft creaks of the shop as it settled around him. To bide his time, he took out a snack one of the shopkeepers had quietly offered him. A thoughtful gesture, given his newly revived, flesh-and-blood form. He took a bite, and for a brief moment, the sensation of food on his tongue almost felt like a comfort. But the reprieve was short-lived; within seconds, his stomach churned violently, and he spat the half-chewed morsel back out.

"I feared as much," he muttered bitterly, discarding the rest. His transformation had come with a caveat; while he was alive once more, food was no longer sustenance. His new vampiric nature allowed him to exist only on blood and the essences of magic, rendering mortal nourishment both inedible and useless. “Seems that these fools will serve yet another purpose,” he smiles.

Just as the taste faded from his mouth, a sound broke the stillness, the scrape of boots against cobblestone outside, accompanied by the low murmur of voices. He caught snippets of rough, mocking laughter, and the stench of stale ale wafted in, mingling unpleasantly with the shop’s potent aromas. The door swung open with a jingle, a sound that once might have seemed cheerful but now only signaled danger as a group of five men swaggered inside. Their eyes glinted with the sort of cruelty reserved for those who saw themselves as untouchable.

Their leader, a hulking figure with shoulders like an ox and a vicious, jagged scar stretching across his cheek, stepped forward. Cracking his knuckles with a cruel, anticipatory gleam in his eyes. "Seems the shopkeep needs a reminder of who runs this town," he sneered, his voice a low growl that carried an edge of menace. He jerked his head, signaling his men to begin their work. They wasted no time, overturning displays, sweeping precious trinkets from shelves, and stomping on delicate charms, shattering them into fragments. Each act of destruction seemed to fuel their vicious glee, and their laughter echoed through the shop, mocking the helplessness they assumed they’d find.

But Tsukishima remained still, biding his time. He watched their movements, studying the way they positioned themselves, noting the confidence of the leader and the slight hesitation in one of the smaller men. A recruit, perhaps, still not fully accustomed to the brutality of the trade. When he decided they were comfortable, he allowed his presence to make itself known. With a soft rustle of fabric, he stepped forward, his piercing red eyes blazing like fire in the dim light. “Well. What have we here?” His voice cut through the laughter like a blade, freezing the men in their tracks.

They turned as one, the leader’s sneer faltering for the briefest of moments before twisting into a look of irritation. “Who the hell are you?” he barked, though there was a tremor in his voice he couldn’t quite hide. Tsukishima only smiled, a slow, unsettling curve of his lips that promised something darker than they could imagine. "Just someone who is hungry. Starving really," he says darkly.

With a flash of his hand, the flickering candlelight seemed to dim further, casting his form into an ominous silhouette. A trick he had learned all those years ago, showing that even after all this time, he could still weave fear with a mere glance. The thugs shifted uneasily, their confidence waning as the shadows around them seemed to thicken and press in, suffocating, as if Magnolia itself rejected their presence. "However, I’m feeling…generous. Consider this your only warning. Leave, now." Tsukishima said, his voice cold and final.

You don’t scare me.” the leader barked, his hand inching toward his dagger, his voice layered with anger and a hint of fear. A dark smile spreads across Tsukishima's face as he steps forward, his gaze cold and unyielding, and cracks his knuckles. A deliberate, ominous sound that cut through the tense silence. “I really hoped you’d say that.

Before the leader could fully grasp his mistake, Tsukishima was upon him. With brutal efficiency, he landed a hard punch squarely to the man’s jaw, sending him reeling backward into a shelf. The leader crumpled, dazed, clutching his face in shock. Another thug lunged in with a short blade, but Tsukishima dodged, his movements a blur. He countered with a sharp elbow to the man’s ribs, followed by a kick to his legs, sending him sprawling onto the floor, gasping in pain. A third man rushed at him with a roar, only to be met with a swift, powerful strike to his midsection. Tsukishima grabbed him by the shoulder, twisting him around and throwing him into a stack of shelves, where he landed in a heap of broken trinkets, groaning as he tried to crawl away.

Now, only two men remained. One of them, a grizzled thug who was clearly more seasoned, charged in, sword drawn. But Tsukishima sidestepped the swing, grabbed the man’s wrist, and twisted it sharply. The sword clattered to the ground as the thug yelped in pain, dropping to his knees, defeated and clutching his injured arm. The last man standing, a young recruit, stared at the scene, horror etched across his face. “And then, there was one.

Tsukishima’s gaze fixed on him. The recruit’s hands shook as he tried to summon enough courage to draw his weapon, but his fear was palpable, his movements unsteady. Tsukishima took a step closer, and the young man stumbled backward, pressing himself against a wall, his eyes darting to the door as if calculating his chance of escape. In one smooth motion, Tsukishima closed the distance, pinning the recruit against the wall with a hand at his throat. The young man whimpered, his wide eyes staring into Tsukishima’s cold, predatory gaze. The hunger rose within Tsukishima, sharp and insistent. Since his transformation, this need had become a constant companion, whispering to him in moments like these. The recruit’s pulse thrummed under his grip, and Tsukishima could feel the frantic rhythm, the fear and life bound up in each beat. Without a word, he leaned in, his fangs grazing the recruit’s neck before sinking into the soft flesh. The young man gasped, his struggles weak and fading as Tsukishima drank deeply, the warm blood flooding his senses, filling the emptiness that gnawed at him. His grip tightened slightly as he drained the recruit, every beat of the man’s heart echoing through him, satisfying his vampiric hunger.

Tsukishima released the young man, letting his limp body slump to the floor. He straightened, licking the remnants of blood from his lips, his senses sharpened and his hunger momentarily sated. He surveyed the shop, the remaining bandits groaning and clutching at their injuries, too terrified to even consider retaliation.

Delectable,” Tsukishima murmured, savoring the lingering taste of fresh blood as his hunger momentarily subsided. The desire to drain more pulsed within him, fierce and intoxicating, but he held himself in check. Draining them all would raise suspicions, and he had plans that would be better served by letting most of these bandits live. From outside, the clinking of armor and hurried footsteps announced the arrival of the Rune Knights. No doubt they’d been summoned by the noise and alerted by the commotion within. Tsukishima turned his gaze back to the cowering thugs, a cold smirk spreading across his lips as he advanced on them with slow, predatory grace. His shadow fell over the battered group, and they shrank back, their terror palpable.

Tell your friends,” he said, his voice a low, icy murmur that sent chills down their spines. “this ends tonight. No more harassing these merchants, or next time, more of you may end up like him.” He gestured to the lifeless recruit sprawled on the floor, his face pale and empty. “But as for what happened here…” he continued, his tone dark with unspoken menace, “none of this ever happened. Right?” The men nodded frantically, fear overriding any trace of pride or resistance they might have once had. One of them whimpered, clutching his injured arm as he scrambled to his feet, urging his comrades to follow. Desperate to escape the predator in front of them, they backed away toward the door, casting horrified glances at Tsukishima, as if one last look might assure them he wasn’t some nightmare come to life.

Oh, and remember,” Tsukishima added, his voice dripping with mock sweetness, “there were always only four of you.” His lips curled into a wicked smile, an unspoken threat hanging in the air. They understood. None of them would dare utter a word about the true fate of their fifth companion. Just as the Rune Knights burst through the door, the battered quartet stumbled forward, practically flinging themselves into the lawmen’s arms, desperate for the protection they once scoffed at. The Knights, noticing their injuries and the chaotic state of the shop, began to question them, but the men remained tight-lipped, only muttering incoherent apologies and casting fearful glances back inside.

In the deepening shadows, Tsukishima knelt by the lifeless recruit and hoisted the body over his shoulder with ease, his movements silent and controlled. He watched from the darkness as the Rune Knights hauled the surviving bandits outside, offering little explanation for the chaos. Only after the shop fell silent did he step back, blending seamlessly with the shadows at the shop’s edge. “I suppose it’s time to collect my pay,” he murmured to himself, a glint of satisfaction in his eyes as he slipped away into the night, the recruit’s body still draped across his shoulder.
