Alaric Holloway
The sun was beginning to set as Alaric left the bustling marketplace behind him. His mind was a whirlwind of emotions anger, confusion, and a newfound sense of purpose. His mother, the one who had abandoned him, was within reach. The thought drove him forward. The trek to Worthwoodsea Village wasn't just about putting one foot in front of the other for Alaric. No, it was like diving headfirst into a pool of memories, each ripple pulling him deeper into the murky waters of his past. With every step on the meandering path, it was like someone had cracked open a floodgate, unleashing a deluge of childhood recollections that threatened to sweep him away. The bitter chill of Bosco's winters, the relentless howl of the wind through the trees, the echo of his own footsteps against the icy ground, it was all there, etched into the very fabric of his being. But it wasn't just the physical discomfort that clawed at him. The emotions weighed him down like a sack of bricks. The memory of his mother's abandonment was something he never overcame. It was the constant void in his soul. No amount of time could ever seem to fill that hole, it was always present.

He paused. The forest was still and quiet. The noise Alaric had just made probably scared off any animals nearby. He could smell the moss and damp dirt right away. Alaric’s heart was pounding so loud it felt like it was echoing through his whole body. He leaned against a tree for support, breathing heavily and ragged. All he could hear was the blood rushing in his ears. Memories of that time with Teveni and Toga washed over him, making him feel like he was slipping away again. Was the wolf about to show himself again? Why was Alaric losing control so often? He had never had issues with his transformations like this. Not since he was a child. A sharp pain started in his toes and shot up to his head like lightning. His head throbbed, and he lost his grip on the tree, collapsing to the ground and clutching his chest.

His breathing got frantic. He couldn’t catch his breath. Each inhale was short and desperate, each exhale tired. “What is happening to me?” he muttered as he fell to the ground. With all his might, he rolled onto his back. He lay there, gasping, trying to get his thoughts and breath together. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting warm spots of light on his skin. The warmth and the peaceful scenery helped him slowly get control again. His breathing calmed down, though his head still hurt. Alaric had just had a major panic attack, something he had never gone through before. It felt like his heart was going to explode. He felt helpless and exhausted, like never before. His own body had turned against him.

After what felt like an hour, but was really just a few minutes, Alaric finally pulled himself up. His mind was still racing, his head throbbing, but he managed to hold himself together. The thought of finally meeting the woman who had left him years ago was catching up to him. He felt weaker than before. His pace slowed, but he pushed himself forward through the forest. He couldn’t let this moment slip away. Who knew if he’d ever get another chance to see her once she knew he was around? This was his now-or-never moment. He had been searching for his family his whole life.

As he moved through the thick forest, it felt like the trees were closing in on him. Tall trees cast long shadows on the ground. Leaves rustled, and distant bird calls filled the air, keeping him in the present. The smell of moss and damp dirt was strong, keeping him grounded. Each step was a struggle, his legs heavy. The forest, once a place of comfort and adventure, now felt like a maze testing his willpower. Alaric’s thoughts were all over the place, memories of the past mixing with his current anxiety. The pain in his chest dulled to an ache, a constant reminder of his weakness. He couldn’t stop thinking about her face, the woman who had left him, and the questions that haunted him. Why did she leave him? What had he done wrong? These questions drove him forward, despite the physical and emotional toll. Anger and helplessness both swirled through his head. Was there more to her choices than he knew? Would he ever be able to forgive her?

Sunlight streamed through the trees, making patterns on the forest floor. Alaric focused on the warmth, using it to calm his racing mind. He had come too far to turn back. The journey had been long and hard, but he was closer than ever to finding the answers he needed. With each step, he renewed his resolve. He would find her and finally learn the truth about his past. The pain in his head and chest were still present but perhaps it was the anger within him that pushed him forward. Having regained his stride, Alaric firmly pressed his foot into the ground. The soft muddy clay formed around the boot. He twisted his foot as if he was getting traction. With a forceful push, he launched himself off the ground. Moving forward at a speed unprecedented by the man. His strides were quick and purposeful. As he moved, he felt his body ache. It was not the same pain as before but it was a drive, a call to change.

As he moved forward, his body began to hunch down lower and lower to the ground. Before he realized it, Alaric was using his front hands as a second set of legs. He was running through the forest in a more feral manner. Fur began to sprout around his limbs. Before he knew it, Alaric had taken on his common wolf form. Something that felt at home in the lush canopy of the forest. On all fours, he moved more agilely through the woods. Leaping over fallen trees, using the bend in the path towards his momentum in the run. Alaric was subconsciously burning off steam. He wasn’t even aware yet that his form had shifted. He was too honed in on reaching his goal now. His nose and mind were focused on the same thing, the settlement of Erwyr and those who lived within its boundary. He was not far now, not far at all. He would be there within the hour if he kept at this pace. He would be in front of her within an hour.

As Alaric grew closer to the settlement the smells of cooking meats, livestock, and humans grew more and more potent. He knew that he needed to shift back to a human form. A wolf may be allowed to run freely in the woods but when it approaches a settlement, then things could really take a turn for the worse. His pace gradually started to slow. The forest was become more sparse as he passed the trunks of trees that had been chopped down by the denizens of the settlement. Once his progress slowed to a simple walk speed, the fur began to flake off. Like a shedding dog, the hairs fell from his flesh and found their way tucked on the branches as he passed. The ground was filled with a light brownish grouping of hairs. The once quadraped creature had lifted its front up. Its bones were twisting and snapping in place as it pressed forward. Alaric found himself near the edge of the settlement, a ways away from the official road that led in. He stood there, propping himself up by a tree and watching with his eyes as men and women moved throughout the camp blissfully unaware of the raging wolf that stood in their shadows.

Alaric took a long pause there. He stood at the base of the camp for nearly ten minutes before finally finding the resolve within to make a move. He took a big breath and exhaled. His nerves were still on ten but he needed to meet this challenge head-on. This has been what he was looking for for the past decade. Why was he getting so worked up now that it was within his grasp? His nose took a big whiff but he couldn’t even remember her scent anymore, it had been too long. Was she here? Without knowing it, his left foot stepped forward. Next his right, then once again his left. His mind was still racing about what to do but his body, no more like his heart was ready to act. It was pulling him forward even if he wasn’t ready to face his past like this. It was now or never.

As Alaric walked into the encampment, many eyes turned to the stranger. The people that live here are simple. They did not seek fame or fortune. There was no glory in battle to these people. They were here for the fact that this place was peaceful and wrapped in nature’s beauty. If it were any other day, Alaric might have taken in the scene more. He felt like a place such as this might have been somewhere he’d settle as his own home if given the chance. The people did not look scared of the man they appeared just shocked. It was a simple camp, or perhaps a village if you could call it that. There were small stalls for trading. Not much, more natural items than what you’d find in the city. Alaric’s eyes did not even look over the good. They were too busy scanning the face of every woman who passed him. None of their eyes were her though. Where was she?

“Where is she.” He grumbled as he walked through the streets. The eyes of the villagers were like daggers on him. He could feel the cold blades plunging through his back and sides. He was clearly an outsider but also one that was looking rather feral and ragged. Though he had shifted to a wolf on his run here, he had still picked up a decent amount of dirt on his face and clothing. His presence was daunting and dangerous. He could hear whispers but could not make out what they said. His ears would twitch with each hushed voice. These humans weren’t dumb, their instincts were spot on. Alaric was a dangerous stranger and one who was close to blowing his fuse. Magic had radiated out from him, unknowingly. The heat from the man’s magic made summer day much more unbearable. The crowd began to part to the side as they saw him or felt him coming. His anger and confusion were reaching a boiling point it seemed.

Alaric was getting close to the center of the village when a voice called out to him. It was a soft voice. That of a child. “Excuse me minster. Are you okay?” Alaric’s burning focus was dosed with ice water in that instance. He turned around to see a small girl, no older than twelve standing there. Her attire was simple and humble. A pale blue dress with a white ribbon tied around it. Her feet were bare and her hair was crudely brushed. She looked similar to the rest of the villagers. Her face was pure and innocent. The expression seemed genuine. Alaric was thrown off. “Ah, um yea. I’m fine.” Alaric turned away from the girl but felt a tug on his shirt. He turned around to see her standing there with her hand on his shirt. “You seem upset. Like you’ve lost something. Do you need us to help you find it?” us? Alaric thought to himself before seeing a few more kids appearing from a nearby tent. “We know all the best hiding spots around here."
