”What’s the big X in the corner?” Merry asked with innocent eyes, flailing its little feet paws in the air as he sat on a chair way too big for his size. Kenzo lowered his gaze from the map and curiously looked at the macchia.

”This?” Kenzo asked cautiously, wondering if the sneaky cat had any ulterior motives behind the seemingly innocent question. After all, who didn’t know what the red X on a pirate map meant? Considering Merry had spent many years adventuring, the warrior couldn’t help but feel he was being set up for an elaborate joke.

Nodding at the swordsman’s question, Merry eagerly perked his ears as he waited for an answer. ”Erm.. that’s the place where the treasure is… you know? Like in every piece of media every created about pirates? The X marks the spot?” Kenzo answered cautiously, waiting for the cat to punch back.

”Ah I see.” Merry replied nonchalantly, confusing Kenzo even further and simply keeping him on edge. It was almost as if he waited for the tiny guy to spring up a punchline and made fun of him. Even worse for the now weary mercenary, Merry seemed entirely content with his reply, as if it had been a genuine question. For some reason, Kenzo didn’t buy it.

Deciding to keep his guard up, the man moved to more pressing matters. The captain of the ship of the line they sailed in had apparently finished with the tally of casualties for their recent encounter. Entering the room, the naval officer tapped his boot against the ground, calling for Kenzo’s and Merry’s attention at once. ”We’ve only got minor bruises and a couple of damages to repair. The ship is good to go for our next destination.” Kenzo smiled, pleased at the outcome.

”What about the captives?” Kenzo asked, wondering how quick they could leave with the amount of provisions they had, considering the large number of pirates they had just captured.
”Well… Thankfully one of their vessels was left in a more or less shape. Enough for my men to use. They’re chaining and loading them up as we speak. So we won’t be slowed down by the extra cargo” Kenzo noticed a sly smile trace the captain’s lips as he stressed the final word, chuckling with amusement as he understood an unknown part of the usually stoic captain’s demeanor.

”Very well. Seems like we’re all ready to go for the boss now. You got any intel on this so-called warlord of the sea? I’m afraid I haven’t heard of him before.” Kenzo asked as he handed over the map to the captain, its contents charting the next course for their voyage.

”They call him The Rat. We’ve been trying to flush him out for months now, but he’s as slippery as his monicker would suggest.” The man replied, scratching the back of his head in clear frustration. Clearly the man had more history with this warlord than Kenzo first anticipated.

”He’s the kind of scum that scurries away at the first sight of danger, taking extreme precautions to always leave an escape route in case things go south.” The captain sat on an empty chair just across the table. ”I’ve personally surrounded him thrice before… and every time he’s managed to slip away from our encirclement”

Never to lose a chance though, Merry would be the first one to comment on what Kenzo himself was thinking about. ”Ku ku ku. Seems like you’re pretty bad at encirclements then” The tiny cat teased the captain, failing to hold back a devilish laugh.

Kenzo shot a glare at Merry as soon as he did that, fighting back against the laughter himself at the words of the machia. ”Ahem… any suggestions then?” The man quickly replied, trying to change the topic from the comment his companion had just made. He’d have to privately fist bump Merry for the roast though, it had perfect comedic timing after all.

”Well, the only thing that comes to mind that we haven’t tried yet is trying to sneak around and surprise him. Other than that, we’ve tried anything in our power. I’m even beginning to think the scum has some sort of teleportation magic at this point” The captain answered with a defeated shrug, rubbing off the sneaky words of the cat as if unbothered, with only the faint blush on his face betraying how he truly felt about it.

Teleportation magic was rare, but not too rare.

Nodding at the seaman, they finally embarked on their journey to catch The Rat. Kenzo discussed a couple of things as they closed in on the location marked at the map, deciding on a plan of action that would surely net them the biggest chance of success.

As soon as they arrived closer to the islet where The Rat hid, Kenzo sneaked away quietly in the dark of night. Deciding not to take any chances, the warrior summoned the half mask with the shape of an evil skull from his pocket dimension ring. This was the first time he’d used the mask’s powers since he first acquired it, hesitant to see if the piece would come back to life and try to consume him whole again.

As he coursed mana through the mask though, he noticed the piece of equipment did its job as expected. He was now completely invisible.

Sneaking around the camp, it appeared that the pirates had been celebrating by drinking heavily; large flagons of empty ale were scattered all around the sands of the beach. Many of the pirates were now in a drunken sleep, deeply unbothered by the faint sounds of Kenzo’s boots against the sand.

After a while looking around the hidden building, Kenzo finally found the man they called The Rat. True to his nickname, the guy had a horrible snout, resembling that of a smug rat, just like the captain had described him. In the depths of night, the warrior’s silent blade slit the pirates throat, ending his eternal flight once and for all.

Getting back to the beach, the blue-haired mercenary finally lit the signal for the captain back at the ship, allowing the men to row their boats and land on the shore. The fighting wasn’t too fierce, considering how drunk the pirates were. All in all, the fight ended with a resolute victory.
