There wasn’t any breakthrough on the inner turmoil Haru was facing, but at least he recognized that he was overreacting to the Miller situation the previous morning. As time went by, he only felt guiltier, especially after the man was knocked out cold by a strange orb by the river. So, the next day, after lunch, the healer walked to the local hospital to check how the detective was holding up. However, Miller was no longer there; the nurse told him that the man got discharged after that morning after the final check-ups. Glad that he was okay, Haru thanked the nurse and was about to leave the hospital.

On his way out, he met Dacol, the man who guided him to the hospital the previous day. Haru couldn’t help but notice how distressed the guy was and decided to inquire. “Everything okay?” he asked, smiling softly. “Ah! It’s you. Listen… The blue orb you and your friend witnessed last night? I saw it again. This time in humanoid form,” he said, worry obvious in his voice. “You are a Knight, right? Do you think you can investigate it tonight?” he asked. “Of course!” Haru said almost immediately. The orb blasted them away and while it barely did anything to him or his partner, it did knock Miller out. So, it was a potential threat to other citizens.

Haru reckoned it was better to check this anomaly with Akira since she has had a deeper interaction with the thing. He went back to the Rune Knight quarters, updated his partner with the details and decided to go back to the river at night.

Aki slept well into the day. The sun had already poured in through the window in the room and had already disappeared and now hung right overhead. A wince marred her face as she stirred and eventually rolled off the bed, her hands flying to her head and cradling her face. It felt like she was hungover, in fact the moment she sat up straight, her stomach lurched and a pang of nausea coursed through her. She bit her lip in order to attempt stifling the bile that rose in her mouth, upon failing the teen streaked to the bathroom. There wasn't much to throw up, but she sat their retching for what seemed like hours. Finally, the feeling resolved itself, but left her quite exhausted again.

Eventually, she gathered the energy to go speak to Tsuru and let him know she wasn't feeling too well. The girl speculated it had something to do with what happened with that orb that previous night. Slightly wobbly on her feet, she tumbled right into him as she ducked out of her room. 'Oh... sorry.' she muttered, instinctively using him as support to right herself. 'I'm not feeling too great.' she added, before swiftly stepping back and leaning against the wall instead of her partner.

Akira banged into him just as he was about to turn into the corridor where her room was. Her petite figure didn’t cause much of an impact to knock him back, but she did lose her balance. Haru quickly held her as she clung to him for support. He had known his partner to be extremely alert and non-clumsy. So, it was an immediate give-away that something was wrong. “Hey! You okay?” he asked, and she replied, confirming his suspicions.

Helping her back to the room, he asked her to lie down on the bed so that he could try healing her. “Let’s see what’s wrong,” he said, placing both his palms on both sides of her head. He sensed no physical ailment, which meant there was a magical cause behind her sickness. He wondered what it could have been. The first thing that he suspected was some fight that she could have encountered during the night when he was asleep; she did that quite frequently. “Did you fight someone during your night stroll?” he asked. If she denies that, only then would he realize this could have been caused by her interaction with the blue orb the night before. Given that, he would feel it imperative that she recovers by the night and come with him to investigate so that they could stop this from happening to anyone else.

Once the sun was about to set, if Akira felt better and was up to it, the duo would walk to the river as Dacol requested. Like he was informed, there was indeed a magical spirit by the river. “Can you guys see that?” Dacol asked the two, pointing towards the cyan-coloured haze. “Yeah!” Haru said. Curiosity took over him and he approached the spirit. Soon, he could hear an echoing voice urging him to come even closer. “What… are you?” he asked, squinting at the spirit rather sceptically.

For the briefest of moments, that her partner returned the accidental hug, she felt her face flush, which perhaps had something to do with the way she sprung away from him given the opportunity. She allowed him to lead her back into the room, following after him in a slightly disdainful state. There was no harm in trying to allow him to heal her, if it brought her relief the girl would be eternally grateful after all. Unfortunately, Akira wish she hadn't been even slightly hopeful. The girl concealed her disappointment to avoid making the poor healer feel inadequate, this wasn't his fault. She answered his questions in gestures, not trusting herself to speak. The agreed upon the fact that it had to do with the orbs, when he shared that there was more to that blue thing than what she witnessed yesterday, she was morbidly interested to say the least. As evening hit, her state bettered and she was ready to accompany her partner.

Off they went, trotting towards the river as the sun painted it orange, then a bloody red, before disappearing behind it. Dalcol, a face she vaguely remembered from the night before, greeted them, meanwhile, Akira had already spotted the spirit they'd spoken off. The voice in her head caught her off guard, the words made her even more wary. She wasn't too keen on accepting the beckoning call of this spirit creature, but obliged, ensuring that she avoided contact. 'What do you want?' she asked through grit teeth, as the beginnings of a migraine started threatening her well-being again. The spirit regarded her curiously and perhaps as cooly as she regarded him. He explained his borrowed existence and that he wish to seek help. Aki relayed this to Tsuru, wondering if he too had been subject to the mental intrusion from the kid.

The cyan glow the spirit had reminded Haru very much of the orb they had encountered before. So, he had no reason to doubt Dacol’s theory that the orb had evolved into a humanoid form. Seeing how Haru and Aki could interact and communicate with the spirit, Dacol became excited and requested them to give him all the details so that he could inform the higher-ups. There really was no reason for that since he had two Lieutenants right there, but Haru didn’t wish to pop the man’s bubble and agreed to his request.

The spirit introduced himself as an old soul that had died a long time ago but had remained in this plane as a ghastly form due to the magic he possessed during his lifetime. As they delved deeper into the conversation, it demanded a lot of concentration and Haru couldn’t hear anything that Dacol was saying. The spirit told them he had no choice but to reveal himself as he wished to find and help someone very dear to him. Before Haru could ask him for more details, the spirit said they would meet again and dispersed into thin air.

Dazed by the experience, Haru had to find his balance to ensure he didn’t fall on his back. Dacol rushed forward and steadied him. “Woah! You okay?” he asked. Haru nodded slightly and thanked him. He then turned towards Akira to see if she was doing okay; he was afraid it might have hit her harder as she was already affected by it before.

The wince on her face etched itself deeper into her features with every passing second. The voice in her head had a sharp quality, a piercing sort of trait which almost seemed to be weakening her. She stifled a grunt.  To spare herself the embarrassment of buckling to her knees, she decided it'd be better if she chose to sit down. She flopped onto the tuft of dewy grass without a care in the world, sitting cross-legged in front of this ethereal blue spirit. The cyan creature that hailed from the realm of the dead, explained that it needed help, to aid someone it cared for while it lived. Sure have a great way of asking for it Aki thought bitterly as she rubbed her temple.

The spirit also said that in doing so some crisis could be averted, which led Akira to exhale a long sigh. 'We'd have probably helped either way, you really don't need to sell it to us...' she finally responded, slightly sardonically. Perhaps her tone caused the spirit to clam up, or maybe it just wasn't ready to give the details up yet... There was no way of deterring it from vanishing into thin air again. Not that Akira minded, its disappearance dulled her headache. She merely turned towards Tsuru, just as he looked towards her. The lunar mage was mildly curious as to his interaction with Dacol.

It would seem the spirit had a severe effect on him than on his partner this time around. Maybe she is accustomed to it now, he thought, smiling out of relief that she was okay. Meanwhile, Dacol seemed impatient to know all the details and Haru explained the situation to him calmly. “… And he vanished after that without giving any further details,” he finished. The dark-haired man wasn’t entirely convinced that this was the end of the investigation and he had good reason to believe so. “You should talk to Inspector Nilan when you see the spirit again,” he said before taking his leave. Haru nodded and thanked him once again.

Once Dacol had walked away, Haru turned to Akira and offered a hand to help her up. “Looks like it went better today for you,” he said as they walked back towards the Rune Knight quarters. On their way, he noticed several flyers pinned up all over the town, advertising the presence of a certain famous circus group. When he pulled one out of the notice board, the drawings in the flyer came to life as little light beings and showed a trailer of what magical tricks one could expect from the circus. Impressed by the spell cast on the flyers and intrigued as to what more these talented performers could do, Haru decided they should go see it that night.

“Hey! Look at this,” he said, calling out to Akira and pulling out another flyer to show her what he saw. With the stupid grin on his face, he practically dragged his partner towards the circus. “Let’s go!”

She pulled herself to her feet, albeit much slower than her usual pace, following which she tumbled towards Tsuru, struggling a little to maintain her balance as her vestibule and hearing systems were still reeling from the unwelcome assault on her mind by the spirit. She must've looked better than she felt, although a little dizzy she sat herself down again, only to be helped to her feet by her partner. 'I suppose, if he keeps appearing and using solely this mode of communication, I swear I'll be quite inclined not to help...' she muttered, her words were a slur and perhaps weren't too clear.

She had overheard the bit about the inspector though and scoffed, it appeared that this Dacol guy and the alleged inspector he wanted to earn the favour of, had no idea that they were dealing with Lieutenants. 'Think that inspector is going to be able to handle things himself?' Aki asked, as they started on their way back to the quarters. There was a slight bitterness to her voice because in her experience a lot of the Knights lacked experience. 'I don't think so...' she muttered.

Meanwhile the flyers that demanded attention so vigorously had been shut out rather effectively by the duller sixteen year old, until one was waved right in front of her eyes. 'What?' she asked softly as his gestures forced her to stop worrying about the future for the moment. His long lost grin seemed to have made a comeback and just for that she bit her lip and held back her dissuasion. In fact, she managed a small smirk back. 'Yeah... let's.'
