The sun cast an orange and golden glow on the leaves as it dipped behind the horizon. Barely visible it gave off a soft glow. The minutes ticked by. The wind mage sat near his tea pot, legs crossed and slipping in and out of meditation to pass the time. He extended his senses to the air around him making sure he could sense any presence around him but the only movement belonged to the trees and leaves

The sun had almost set. Its golden glow gave way to the creeping darkness of night. He opened his eyes taking another sip of his tea before waving his hand to conjure a gust of wind to extinguish the small fire. He now sat in the darkness. Hidden from the common mans eyes, or whoever would wander by the tree line of the forest. The chirping birds retreated to slumber at the last light of the suns rays reached the forest.

It was not much longer when a distant image appeared. Walking down the path was a dark figure. Their hood was drawn up and they wore a heavy cloak. One that concealed nearly all aspect of their being from a distance.

The figure got closer until it followed the wood line. Every few feet the person glanced over their shoulder. Kaz stayed still, his breath shortened and hushed. Eyes fixed on the would be target. The person just had to step into the forest to confirm his suspicions.

That’s exactly what they did as the figure scanned behind them once more before walking into the forest.

Kazimir grasped the branch slowly. Shifting all his weight to his arms and lowering himself down. His toes grazed the ground first. His heels touched last and he bent his knees crouching down touching the ground with his hands. Barely any foliage was disturbed and his presence was kept secret.

The wind mage began his cover operation. Tailing the man from behind. He moved through the wild with a low stance. Keeping the brush around him for cover. His motions more like and animal than a man, but oddly comfortable. Almost a sense of familiarity.

The man whipped his head around. Kaz froze in his spot. His ankle straining to keep his body from moving. His abs tightened to stabilize his torso. His body leaned next to a tree for cover. His face peaking out through the high bush next to it. One eye still on the man.

The man returned to his route. The wind mage gave an inaudible sigh of relief, continuing his pursuit. He would catch this man at all cost. He would not let a job go unfinished again. He made his way around the brush until the man was within a clear view.

They had arrived to a small clearing. The plant growth around them was all normal, at least for the time being. Kaz’s eyes narrowed onto the man. Starring a hole through his back. An animal ready to pounce. The hooded figure reached into his pocket and pulled out a wide object with a thin top. Opaque in his hands but with a yellow liquid inside.

The hooded figure took the bottle and poured its contents out onto the soil at his feet. The liquid moved as thick as molasses. A slow plodding onto the ground, it oozed outward with a faint shimmer. The ground invited it in, soaking its contents deep into the soil leaving behind an eerie pulsing glow. The plants around it were unharmed. Even thirst for it. Within seconds the plants shifted ever so slightly. One would thing they were gulping in the contents poured around them, through gaping mouths in their roots.

The hooded figure stood straight. His body rigid and his head darting left and right. Something was off. The person whirled around, leaning forward and craning his neck at all angles, peering through the trees and the bushes. Searching until his eyes fell on Kazimir. Somehow the man was alerted to his presence.

Hastily the hooded figure dashed off in the opposite direction. Leaving the empty potion bottle behind. Not a drop remained in its container. “Crap,” Kaz huffed to himself before jumping from his hiding spot and giving chase. Their feet smashed against the ground, snapping twigs. Branches shuffled from being shoved aside as the two charged through the wild. Even in his days running with his tribe he hadn’t felt this free. This full of adrenaline. Something more primal was stirring within him as he hunted the man down.

The figure reached into his pocket once more and heaved a small bottle like container behind him. The area filled with an explosion of light that was nearly blinding.

Kaz thrust his arm across his eyes clinching them shut. His feet dug into the ground stopping his movement in a skid of mud building up around his boots. He could still hear though. The man was still racing ahead of him. He conjured air around his feet and leaped into the trees above. Still partially blinded he crashed into a branch. Ignoring the ache of his now hurt shoulder he grasped the branch and swung atop its thick structure.

His vision returned partially, through a rapid series of blinks, he could make out the man. Having no more time for these games he made a circle with his arms and conjured a deadly whirlwind that tore through the area the man ran in. A scream in pain was all he heard but his vision was back.

He ran through the air pushing himself closer to his prey until he was around the damage. It was silent now. The man was hiding but he could extend his senses to the air around him. Feel the subtle vibrations of his heavy breathing and movements.

A quick ripple filled the air and Kaz pounced over a tree stump and hovered over the man like a hawk. “Time to come with me,” he said as the hooded figure reached into his pocket once more. Kaz hurriedly grabbed his arm and placed a hand over his face. With a simple hand gesture he shot a blast of wind at near point-blank range, knocking the man out cold.

The wind mage returned to the inspectors office with the man in cuffs. He was now conscious from the walk over and not saying a single word. The rest of the officers were accustomed to this and made no note as Kazimir marched him to the inspectors office.

“I got him,” Kaz announced as he shoved the man into the room.

“I’m not saying anything,” the man spook smooth and confidently. No expression on his face.
“Looks like we’ll have to take some time on cracking this one, “ Nilan replied. “Thank you for today, you’ve been a great help. If there’s ever anything the force can do for you, let me know,” he added as he gave Kaz his pay.

“Just keep me updated on what you learn. I hope this is the end of it,” Kaz replied as he took the money and walked out of the office.

He heard the door shut behind him and the inspector saying, “Alright, let’s get started.”
