Ever since mankind first invented war, its endless cycle of bloodshed and strife has been refined countless times through the eras. Like any other art, it has been those that have pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible that have come to be known as Masters. Surging out of the want to imitate their legendary feats, those that have become students of battle have gotten to be known as tacticians. As someone that grew in the battlefield, Kenzo too strove to follow their steps.
It was said, among those with higher levels of skill in chess, that white always held an inherent advantage. Countless theorists and players had reached a consensus over this to be the case. Yet, it was a notion that had been recently challenged as more modern tactics to play as blacks appeared. Instead of the old postulates in which black would endlessly play a catching up game, black was a position that ought to seek unbalanced, dynamic positions with active counter play, rather than merely trying to equalize. Kenzo did not hold it against those that still thought white had the upper hand in chess, they were merely victims to the notions of old men and older days. If he were to achieve victory, he’d merely prove them wrong.
Kenzo grinned after everything was said and done. Upon reaching their positions, the lemur dropped the rock and the match started. At the same instant the stone hit the ground, Kenzo had already started sprinting further away from the gravity wizard. He had seen what his guild mate was capable of doing while fighting against the Kraken of Astera, so he knew he better be careful. Trying to fight a long-range battle would mean a disadvantage in the long run, so he needed to shorten the distance as quickly as possible. Kenzo was sure Noel wasn’t likely to suddenly appear through the air flying, considering he had seen first-hand what his sword’s dispelling ability could do to flight spells. More than likely, his attack would come from the ground.
As such, he made sure to get away from the starting position of his guild mate, maintaining a running angle that allowed him to look back towards the location of his opponent. As he started building up speed, the swordsman followed a parabolic trajectory that would take him away from and right back again to his starting position without losing acceleration. By the time he was back, Kenzo had already reached maximum speed. Observing attentively Noel’s actions throughout all this time, he saw the gravity wizard disappear behind a dust cloud created from his fired spell. While still building up speed, Kenzo kept a keen eye to the horizon near the borders of the dust cloud in case Noel came out of there. However, it would seem that his opponent had made use of the sight obstruction the same way as the warrior. When the two of them came back into sight, Noel was right next to the edge of the smokescreen and Kenzo had made it back to his starting position, both running at about 30 m/s.
Before the fight had started, the warrior had considered a single objective for the initial phase: making sure he was not found in an awkward position. Considering Noel held a ranged advantage over him, he wanted to make sure that he’d be facing his opponent as much as possible to avoid any spells from the sides. Even if that came to happen, he still had an ace up his sleeve. However, he still actively sought to avoid using it. Taking this into consideration, Kenzo began closing the distance between the two of them at full speed, not slowing down for a second and moving generally in a straight line towards Noel, while keeping the previous condition met. As the two got in sight, Noel started charging his demonic arm as a magic circle formed. Preparing his sword while on the run, Kenzo was ready to face whatever came his way. With each step they took, a large gap between the two was reduced. Considering that they still ran at maximum velocity, any changes in direction could not be done with a steep angle. As such, their trajectories would bring them closer to each other much faster than anticipated. Shortly after charging his demonic arm, Noel fired a beam of concentrated gravity towards Kenzo. It was a spell the warrior had previously seen before, so he made sure not to underestimate it.
Holding Masamune in front of him, the mercenary slashed the beam coming his way and made it disappear without a trace. A large chunk of mana was sucked out from Kenzo’s pool, but he was still ready to fight. Never losing a single step, the Bellan swordsman kept inching closer to Noel with every second. Eventually, the two of them would find within 4 meters from each other, but it was still too far for his sword to reach. At this distance, the white eye of Dhan-Galhoul could see each and every movement that Noel would do, so Kenzo would be ready to react accordingly if the gravity wizard tried something funny. Unfortunately for the warrior, he would be unable to catch Noel as he changed his trajectory to keep a safe distance from himself. Instead, as long as his opponent didn’t do something that would alter Kenzo’s decision, he would instead lunge instantly away from Noel either once or twice before coming to a halt. Not wasting a second, the blue haired man would turn to face the gravity wizard once again. Since none of them held an edge over the other in terms of speed, catching up with him would prove to be a bit tricky.
