Avarice and brutality left wreckage in their wake, reducing humble hamlets to ugly rubble. Peasants still broken and battered refused to despair, however, and instead rebuilt what was lost. Among them was Obasi, who, while apathetic to their plight saw potential in charity. In his mind, this pseudo generosity would most likely yield a reward of some kind. Even if he cared not for these peoples’ struggles, the demihuman could still benefit. After all, no one here could divine his intentions. All they knew was that this little squid was a supporter of the dauntless one. They didn’t need to know the motives behind that hammer, only that it was being used to drive a nail into a plank of wood. He figured most here wouldn’t care anyway. They’d much rather have another hand(or tentacle in his case) to help regardless of the reason.

Admittedly, he was being selfish, but for someone with Obasi’s upbringing, it was to be expected.  Greed was his mother’s passion and she’d passed it onto him. So he couldn’t help but place his own interest ahead of everyone else. Except of course when he was pretending to be a “good guy.”

So he couldn’t help, but place his own interest ahead of everyone else. Except of course when he was pretending to be a “good guy.” Like he was at that moment. In fact, he was so good at it that a bunch of villagers thanked him. “What a kind boy.” Or “You are one hardworking demihuman.” Were just a few of the words of thanks’ he’d received.  He’d wondered if this is what it felt like to be a genuine “hero,” or if deep down they were in it for themselves too. Not like he’d know what motivated actual heroic people. Selflessness was a trait for the stupid, ignorant, or naïve and he was neither of those.  No matter how finite thankful these people where he would have preferred their coin.

Another door found itself married to steel hinges.  Men, woman, and child alike, uttered “thank you, sir” from their lips at the youth’s actions. Was it really this easy to win them over?

Then again when you are helping a devastated people rebuild their home it’s a pretty stupid thing to ask. If his residence were pummeled by warring armies, he’d no doubt feel similarly. Gratitude was a strange thing in how it turned even the proudest of humans into groveling servants. Then again perhaps it was incorrect to refer to gratitude in such an unsavory way. It wasn’t bad to be grateful to someone or pathetic. He was grateful to the old Spellhowler who took him in as a lad. If it wasn’t for that old man he’d probably be dead or worse.

“Shit.” He’d cursed to himself. He’d stupidly knocked a jar of nails off a box, and they currently dwelled at his side. All in all it wasn’t that big of a deal. It was just a natural reaction people had to things that momentarily obstructed them. That bit of knowledge didn’t stop the eyes from rolling around his socks though. It was after all a very “human” response. Well, demihumans weren’t exactly human, but they were still capable of such responses. Besides, the alien physiology they acted like and felt the same as humans. Week humans who weren’t like his ice queen of a mother. He hated thinking about her, and the cruelty she’d often showed him.

No time for mommy issues he though. Not when there was more fake acts of charity to comment. More than anything he wanted to be paid. Not that money was everything, but who was he kidding? Money was everything and he knew it. Hopefully, he could get his hands on some soon. And with the final nail nailed, he got up and made his way out. It was time to head back to the lady herself and collect his reward for todays little act of kindness.
