The sun gleamed and the winds were still. The young man, cloaked in black with a large straw hat, sheathed his sword. Ting! It ranged. The beast that stalked him fell to the ground. It wasn’t the first one that he had encountered in the deserted plane. It was by far the most dangerous environment he had stepped foot in. Only the brute and vile of the creatures could survive in the harsh sun and dry land.

Water. His body whispered.

He grabbed a water pouch from his belt and brought it to his mouth. As he tilted it forward, he discovered that it was empty. The sun was about to settle, and he was out of water. He needed to find a place to rest as soon as possible. Who knows how much monsters lurk in the cover of night. Then he saw a horse in the distance, with a person riding on it. They must be heading somewhere. So with his own running speed, Ren tailed the horse and its rider.

Soon enough, he found himself in a town. Where there is a town, there is a tavern. In no time, he found one. As he entered the tavern, the place halt to a silence. It wasn’t the first that Ren had been treated this way, anyone could tell that he was not from around there. His clothes and face were foreign to the land of Fiore. Ren walked straight towards the bar, and sat on one of its tall stool.

“A glass of water please,”.

Yuurei had spent a lot of time within the guild hall drinking and enjoying his time there. Still, it was nice to see the people he was protecting. That was what brought him down to Rush Valley today. After the events with the giants and everything, the Nephilim found the place returning to normal. This was beautiful because it meant that things were getting back to what would be the new normal.

By his side was Renji who was moving as fast as he could to keep up with Yuurei. Their destination was unique, it was the tavern. It was daytime, but it seemed like they were going there to drink with the locals there. It wouldn’t take long for them to arrive at their location.

The berserker would open the doors to the place, and everybody would look over to who had opened it. The stares and the silences weren’t long before they noticed who it was. They would instead raise a glass to him and then they would continue with what they were doing. Yuurei would tilt his head down for a second before he would head to the bar himself.

He and Renji would sit down at the bar as they looked at the bartender.

“Ale for me and milk for him.” He said.

Ren was only there out of desperation. It was rare for him to depend on other humans for his basic needs. But he was not used to the desert environment. Luckily enough for him, he had done several ‘jobs’ and acquired the currency needed to exchange with goods. The bartender placed a glass of water in front of him and he remembered something, “Could you refill this as well?” he requested as he handed his water pouch over to the bartender, to which the bartender said ”Of course,”. Perhaps such request was not odd at all.

The door to the tavern swung open and the place halted to a silence and heads were turned. Naturally, Ren followed. He wanted to know who had caught their attention. If Ren didn’t close himself off from society, perhaps he would’ve immediately recognised the man as well. But alas he had no idea who the man was. The people in the tavern raised their glasses to the man, celebrating his arrival.

’Ironic.’ he thought. A bit amused. Perhaps it was someone well known to the locals.

The person walked up to the bar, a few seats away from where he was. There was something about the man. Something that Ren simply could not put a finger on. He then noticed the, uhh, cat? that followed the person around. It reminded him of the cats he once looked after during his Joyan days. But there was no time to reminisce the past. He still had to find a place to take shelter in for the night. He took the glass of water and drank them all in an instance, before placing a sum amount of money on the bar.

”Will this be enough?” he asked as he stood up, to which the bartender gave a glance at the sum amount and nodded his head towards the ronin.

Ren lacked the experience with money, he’s oblivious to how much an amount is worth. He didn’t rely on them anyway. But apparently the amount he gave the bartender was quite a lot and this had attracted the attention of a few people. As he was heading out, a group of four people stopped him. “Hey, we saw that you have a lot of cash to throw away, why don’t you treat us a bit?” One of them said as he slung his arms across Ren’s shoulders.

”I do not know what you speak of.”.

The group of men just laughed at his reply, ”He speaks weird man,” one of them said. ”Oh c’mon, it won’t hurt, just give us some cash and we’ll be out of your way.” The person with his arms over Ren spoke softly. The person then brought out a knife and pointed it at Ren, hidden from the others.

Ren grew up in the wilderness. So naturally his primal instinct kicked in when he saw the sharp object. He moved his arm to knock the knife away before kicking the man right in the stomach, launching him a few metres away, knocking over a table. That was when Ren realised his mistake and learnt what turning over a table meant in a place like that.

The bartender would get Yuurei his stuff, and he would take a sip of it without waiting. Renji would drink some of his milk as he would create a mustache on his face. To the duo, the drinks were amazing as they would sigh with relief at the taste. They looked over to the guy on the side of them and he would notice that he had handed the bartender too much money. He wasn’t going to intervene in that because it was helping the establishment out.

Still, it seemed to have caught the eyes of others that were in the tavern. Yuurei drank more of his ale as he watched the guy walk away. He figured that he would stay here for a bit, but that wasn’t the case. His eyes looked at him and eventually, he would see a group of people moving toward him. The light mage knew this wasn’t going to be good, but he waited to see what the man would do.

It wouldn’t take long, but it would seem like they were harassing the young man. Yuurei felt as if the man looked very familiar to him, but it was probably his imagination. After the events occurred, it would seem like a table would be flipped from the small fight. He would sigh when he knew what it meant as he looked over at everybody getting up.

“BARRRRR FIGHTTTT!” A few people shouted out loud as they started running around and fighting.

Yuurei would hold onto his ale as Renji would stay where he was. The berserker would dance around the floor avoiding being hit or attacking anybody as well. It wouldn’t take long for him to get to where the stranger was, and he would see that a few men from the group that was harassing him earlier were coming at him.

The half-elf would intervene with one of them as he would get in front of him with a smile on his face. It wouldn’t take him much; he would land a lariat on him as he did a backflip onto the floor. Of course, Yuurei held back as much as he could.

“It seems like you started something here.” He said with a smile on his face.

Ren had never seen such a reckless scene in his life. It was his first bar fight. When everyone started getting up and punching each other, Ren couldn’t help but to assume his fighting stance, pulling his left leg back and bending his knees. While his fists stayed close to his chest, he couldn’t afford bringing out his katana in such a small place. Plus he’s getting the feeling that the fight that broke out wasn’t that serious. So he didn’t need to get that serious.

Someone rushed over towards him, and like a snake bite he released a punch to their face. Then another person tried to land a kick on him but he ducked just in time before he grabbed the person’s leg and threw the person to the side. A fist nearly reached his face if he had not placed his arm to block it, which he then used to grab the man’s arm before he took a step and threw the man forward. Throwing people around was a normal martial art practice back in Joya.

Ren had to handle too many people in such a short amount of time that he did not notice another man coming at him. It was too late to react when he did notice. But then a rope stopped the man in his tracks, before he was thrown down like a bag of sacks. He looked to see who had helped him. It was the person from the bar. Ren did not know what to make of his smile and acknowledgement. Another thing about isolating yourself off from society is that you lack social skills.

”I do not have time for this purposeless fight.”, he said with distaste as he stopped a fist with his bare hand, then used his other hand to grab the man’s arm and moved his leg, throwing the man away with a furious cry.

Yuurei would hear his words. He understood what he was saying, and he didn’t like this pointless fighting either. Still, he started it, and it was going to continue until everyone was on the ground, or the owner of the tavern came out here. He wasn’t sure how long that was going to be, so for now they were going to have to continue fighting.

The light mage would smile because even though he said those words, he had to defend himself. He watched his movements, and it would seem like this guy was somewhat of a brawler.

“Yuu watch it! One coming at you at nine o’clock!” Renji would shout as he continued drinking his milk.

Yuurei would turn to someone coming at him with a chair, and he would move to the side to avoid being hit. When the man stumbled a bit, he would use his free hit and he would chop the man on his neck. He would put him down without a problem. Yuurei would take a sip of his ale as it was amazing, cool and fresh. More people would come to him, and he would use his legs to knock them out as he would use his right leg to put them down on the ground.

“It is a pointless battle, but it is the only way you going to get things done here. It’s that or you going to get hit.” He said to the man.

“The name is Yuurei, what about yours?” He asked him interesting to hear about him.

If this guy was up for it Yuurei would bring him into Paradise Dawn, if he needed a place to call home.

Ren just noticed that the person fought while still holding his ale. Which was intriguing, and impressive. This person could fight while balancing his drink, Ren thought, how well would he be without it?

As if it was prophecy, Ren did get hit right after the person mentioned it. Right in the face. His eyes quickly moved to whoever had punched him. No more throwing people around, he decided. Time to end this nonsense. Ren jumped and grabbed the puncher’s face, before slamming it to the ground. Two brute man then came at him from opposite directions, he waited for the right moment before he jumped up, avoiding the collision. He grabbed both their heads and smashed them together. When he landed next to the white-haired guy, his breath was laboured and his chest pumped heavily. Adrenaline had took him over.

“Ren.” He smiled.

The ronin jumped into the fight again, punched a bloke in the gut before ducking one. He tackled a man into a table, breaking it in half. Then he roundhouse kicked a man in the head and slammed another to a pillar. Ren didn’t know why, but he was quite enjoying it. It was definitely the adrenaline and dopamine, but perhaps this was why all these people loved a bar fight. He’s slowly getting it now.

Yuurei would squint when he saw Ren get hit by someone. That got to hurt, and it was right in the face as well. He flinched from the pain, and when he was done, he would drink some of his ale. It wouldn’t take long, but someone would come after Yuurei, but he would swat the guy away. He was interested to see what the guy in front of him would do. When he saw his action, he would have a smile on his face when he introduced himself.

The light mage was going to say something, but he would notice that there were a group of people surrounding him. They all had a smile on their face, and he would only shake his head about this.

“Seriously guys? All for me?” He asked them.

They wouldn’t say anything as they would start running toward him. They were too slow, as he dodged the first attack, and then backhand another, so he could have space to move around. He sighed as he drank all of his ale, and he would thrust his foot into someone’s chest for getting too close to him.

His body danced around the group of people as he would take them out one hit at a time. Then it would happen. He would stop looking at the glare from across the room and he knew this was over.

“What are you all doing to my tavern! Who started all of this!” She yelled and everybody would point toward the man unconscious with the knife by his side.

From across the room, Ren noticed how Yuurei fought. How he danced in the midst of the battleground. He looked in awe at Yuurei’s movements, how he took out people one by one. He admired his combat abilities. Ren managed to duck a kick, and grabbed the leg. But before he could throw the person away, everybody, including Ren, stopped whatever they were doing.

When the lady asked who started all of this, Ren felt like he was going to be in deep trouble. But surprisingly, everybody else didn’t think that it was his fault. They pointed their fingers at the bloke who had threatened him. Thinking about it, that guy really was the one who started it.

Ren released the leg he was holding. Not knowing what else to do, and that it seemed as if things have settled down, Ren swiftly moved to the door and exited the place. He heaved a heavy sigh, glad that it was over but also glad that it happened. He actually had quite some fun. He didn’t know he could feel this way.

He laughed to himself as he walked away.

Yuurei would move toward the bar, and he would put his mug down. He would look over to the owner and the bartender, and he would put down a lot of jewels on the counter.

“For the mess, the drink, and the service.” He said to them with a smile on his face.

The light mage would notice that Ren had walked out of the tavern when it was all over. The Nephilim couldn’t let this guy escape. He would be a great addition to the guild he was leading. The berserker would look over to Renji and the Exceed would finish his drink and he would hop off his seat. Yuurei was walking out of the door as a group of men were picking up the guy who started all of this.

He was getting kicked out of the tavern and he was going to be banned from it. That sucked, but not his problem. When he stepped out, he would look around to see which direction Ren had gone. When he spotted the white-haired man, he would walk over to him.

“Hey Ren, nice fighting back there. It seemed like you were enjoying it towards the end there.” He said with a smile on his face.

Renji would catch up soon after as he would look at the guy.

“Yuu he looks like you about two years ago.” He said with a smirk on his face.

Yuurei couldn’t see it, but there were similarities.

He noticed the man from before, Yuurei, walked up to him. He wondered why. Ren didn’t stop walking, if Yuurei wanted to talk to him he had to keep up. Ren would listen with his ears while his eyes were fixed towards where he was walking. But don’t ask where he’s heading, he’ll only say that he’s simply following the wind.

”You fought well too,” he replied. He couldn’t help but to grin at Yuurei’s comment. It was true, he did enjoy it. He was guilty of it, and the fact that it was very obvious made him flush with embarrassment. ”I do not know what had gotten into me, but it felt nice,”, he admitted, embracing how he had felt.

Ren then noticed the talking cat, and his remark. Ren too couldn’t see it. Perhaps it was the white hair?

”And who might this be?” he asked. Brushing off the fact that this cat could talk. He had seen many peculiar things in his travel throughout five different countries. This peculiarity should not surprise him at all.

Yuurei would keep the smile on his face. He heard Ren’s voice and he could tell that this guy was a fighter. He could feel it when they were at the tavern, and he could relate. It wouldn’t take long, but the Nephilim would remember that Ren didn’t meet Renji throughout the entire brawl.

“This guy right here is Renji. He’s a friend of mine.” He said with a smile on his face.

Renji would wave at Ren and h wondered why Yuurei was there. The berserker kept walking side by side with Ren. He was thinking about how he was going to speak to him. He wasn’t even sure it would work, but he figured why not.

“Well, I can't tell you what got to you, but I can relate to the feeling. We’re fighters at heart. It doesn’t mean we’re killers, but the thrill of battle just makes our blood rush. It’s why I followed you. You remind me of someone who isn’t knowledgeable about this country. It reminded me of me when I first came out of the forest to Fiore. It’s why I wanted to extend my offer to you to join my guild.” He said this bluntly, but it was how Yuurei rolled.

Ren couldn’t help but to smile when Renji waved at him with his tiny paws. But Ren then immediately looked ahead with a neutral expression. He was also beginning to wonder why Yuurei was there. What he wanted from Ren.

Then Yuurei began to speak. Revealing his true intentions. Ren just listened along, his eyes ahead but his ears open. There were a few things Ren wanted to correct him, but he was not sure how. He was, in fact, lacking in social experiences. Ren had heard of guilds before, but he was not really sure what they are exactly. He just knew that people gather there. There was a bit of a silence after Yuurei had finished talking. It might seem that Ren did not hear a single word of what Yuurei had said. But he was just thinking, thinking of what to reply with.

“I fight because I must.” he started. ”I would not be here if I don’t.” he gazed up at the sky as he walked. A sudden blow of wind passed them.

Ren then turned his head and looked at Yuurei, probably the first time he had laid his eyes on him while they were out there. He held his gaze, looking intently at the other man. ”Where did you come from?” he asked before turning his head back forward. He didn’t know who Yuurei exactly was, and you can’t blame him for having a hard time trusting others.

The silence had begun; he looked over to the young man as he kept walking by his side. He wasn’t sure if what he said was the right thing to say. It was things he assumed from just watching him for the time being. Of course, his words were simple, yet meaningful. He was able to relate to Ren’s words because Yuurei fought a lot because he had to. There were a lot of obstacles, that stood in his way, and he tore them down one by one. There were still hurdles that he had to go over, but he knew the time would come.

“I see, you must have done a lot to get to where you’re now.” He said with a smile on his face.

It wouldn’t take long, but he would see that Ren was looking directly at him. Yuurei would do the same as they would have a staring contest happening now. Yuurei would hear his question and he figured he would tell him. He really didn’t mind it at all.

“I come from Athalran, an enchanted forest filled with wood elves. I left home three years ago and ventured into Fiore’s land. And from there I made a name for myself and somehow became the guild master of a guild called Paradise Dawn here within the Sieghart Mountains. So, it’s not far from here.” He said to Ren wondering if that was what he wanted to hear from him.

Renji would just whistle softly as he wondered why this guy was so on guard. He knew if Yuurei wanted to do something else to Ren he would have done so in the tavern.

Athalran was not an unfamiliar name. Throughout his journey, Ren had met countless wood elves. It was only a given since he ventured among the trees. He actually shares a lot of similarities with the wood elves, his human part faded into history as he grew up in the forests.

There was the mention of guild again. But Ren had never heard of the term ‘guild master’ before. He was curious. Judging from the term, he expected it only meant that this person is the master of the guild. But that meant little to Ren as it would others as he did not even know what a guild really meant.

There was that blow of wind again.

It was not like he had any other thing to do. Plus it would be a new experience for him. So why not.

“Sure.” he said. Pausing for a moment before continuing, ”Take me to this guild of yours.” he smiled a little as he looked at his company.

Yuurei would hear his words again after the silence between them engulfed the area. When the wind blew it seemed like Ren was ready to speak. He heard his words and he was excited to take him there. It wouldn’t be the first time someone from the guild made their way toward the guild. Of course, they didn’t go there on good terms either. Still, the Nephilim would step forward as he would take the lead as he would turn to Ren.

“Okay, follow me then Ren. I will show you how beautiful Paradise Dawn is.” He said to the man as he turned again and started walking back home.

Renji would shake his head and he would look over at Ren.

“It seems like you got Yuurei excited.” He shook his head as he started following Yuurei.

He took a different path than usual in Rush Valley. The trip was quiet, but Yuurei had a smile on his face as he was humming a tune as they were making their way to Hephaestus' workshop. It would take a while, but when they arrive there the two of them would be in front of the Thousand Years Stairway. It would cause Yuurei to turn around as he looked at Ren.

“Once we reach the top, we will be at the top of the mountain and you will see Paradise Dawn from here.” He said as he waited to see what Ren would say.

Renji would climb on Yuurei’s shoulder because there was no way he was walking all of this.

Was this what it’s like to be in the company of another? Ren asked himself. He had forgotten what it was like to have someone excited in your presence. He realised that after hearing what Renji said. Ren followed the duo. It felt weird, following someone instead of venturing away by himself. It gave him space to focus on other things, like the town itself and the people that inhabited it. It might not sound like Ren but he was awed by how remarkable humans can be. Perhaps his time in isolation had painted civilisations in a bad light.

Ren was not a stranger to the silence. To him it was the norm, and anyone could tell after a few time being with him that he was not much of a talker. When he does talk he would only say words that were necessary enough to get the message across to the other person.

The stairs then came into view. He didn’t need to reach the top of it to admire its magnificence. To others, it might just seem like a long flight of stairs, but to Ren it was a work of art. His eyes were intently locked to the work done to the mountain and the structure and material used to build the stairs.

Ren looked at Yuurei, ”I thought you’re taking me there,” he replied with a slight smile as if he was being witty about it. Ren didn’t stop for more chatter. He kept going, up the stairs.

Yuurei would smile at Ren when he heard what he had said to him. He was taking him there, but he didn’t want to hold his hands. The light mage wasn’t sure if that was what he wanted. He moved up the stairs now as they were climbing up.

“I am taking you there. If you wanted, I could have picked you up, and we could have flown together. Still, the last thing I wanted to do was touch you without you telling me to. If you want the offer it's there, so let me know.” He said to him.

Renji would turn around as he was looking at Ren from the side. He fig8ured he would explain more on what Yuurei meant when he said fly them there.

“Yeah, Yuu here can grow wings. He is pretty freaking strong as well, so I think he could pick you up to the guild without a problem. The original members from the guild did all walk these steps though.” He said to Ren as wondered what he would say.

As Ren climbed the flight of stairs, he would hear what Yuurei had to say. Ren really did not understand what Yuurei meant by flying. But he did appreciate how Yuurei acknowledged and were considerate of his personal space. For the moment, he rather keep to himself.

When Renji turned to talk to him, Ren’s eyes shifted to pay attention on him. Something he had not done much with others. Perhaps Ren had already taken a liking to Renji. Thinking about it their names were quite similar.

The young ronin let out a soft laughter, ”Wings? Like a bird?” he looked at Yuurei, imagining the man with wings. Ren had never seen a man with wings before, nor did he know it was possible.

”I will also respect the tradition and walk these stairs.” he replied to Renji. Plus he didn’t mind it at all. Being in the wilderness for so long, climbing up stairs felt different. He enjoyed the new experience.

Renji would hear what he compared Yuurei’s wings too. It made him laugh though, and that was a weird comparison, but at the same time, he knew that Ren has never seen Yuurei transform before. Still, it seemed like he was cool with walking up the stairs. This was the second Yuurei walked up the stairs, but it wasn’t how he got up to the top when he joined Paradise Dawn.

“Nah, not like a bird. That would be weird, but more like angel wings. He’s like a lesser angel or something. I think it’s called Nephilim.” He said as he never got into the details with Yuurei.

Yuurei kept walking as he could hear them having a conversation with each other. While that was happening, they would eventually make it to the top of the steps. There they would see Hephaestus’ workshop right in front of them. On the left, though they would see a huge guild, which looked like a small establishment not too far from them.

“On our left, you will see Paradise Dawn. It is a place where people can come to us and ask for our help. There are a few people here who seek refugee here as well, and we help them out in every way that we can. I still can’t get on how beautiful it all is. The guild master before had good taste when building this place.” He explained to Ren as he continued walking, moving around the workshop and toward the path to the guild.

As Renji explained, Ren shifted his gaze unto Yuurei. Learning that this man was in fact not human. He thought that Yuurei was from Athalran, but perhaps something occurred to him. Ren decided not to pry further into this and leave the Nephilim be.

”And what are your kind called?” he continued the conversation with Renji as they walked up the stairs. Ren seemed to developed a liking towards the talking cat. Nobody had gotten Ren to talk as much as Renji did. Perhaps it was because Ren trusted other beings more than humanoid beings.

Once they arrived at the top, Ren was awestruck by what he saw. His mouth hanged slightly open as he stopped to look at the guild. The way the water fell and produce springs of rainbows amidst the buildings that were built around it. The guild itself seemed like an advance form of civilisation that Ren had never seen throughout his travels. It was majestic in its own right.

After the momentary pause he caught up with Yuurei and Renji. Still feeling amazed by what he was looking at.

Renji would hear his words and it would seem like he didn’t know about the Exceeds. That was fine because he was pretty sure Yuurei didn’t know about them either when they first met.

“I’m an Exceed. We are feline creatures that walk on two legs more often than walking on all fours. We are all capable of speech, and we are known to have magic that allows us to fly, but that isn’t the case for me.” He explained to Ren.

Yuurei kept moving throughout the place as he figured that Ren would be following behind him. Of course, Renji would be the one to see that he was left behind for a few seconds. He would smile a bit as he could tell that Ren was impressed with the guild itself.

“Yeah, we were all like that when we saw the guild for the first time. It has everything you can think of and might need Ren. So, what’s your story? Are you just human or are you something else?” He asked curious to hear what he had to say.

Yuurei heard this and he noticed that Ren had spoken more to Renji than to him. It would seem like Yuurei didn’t gain his trust, but Renji did.

“You don’t have to bother him with that Renji.” He said to his partner in crime.

“I know, but I’m curious to know and I’m sure you want to know more about him anyways.” He said to Yuurei as they would continue to walk.

He was taking him to the guild hall as he planned on showing him the place where a lot of people spent their time in.

A Nephilim and an Exceed. One could fly and one could not. Ren noted in his head. Adding to the collection of various different creatures he encounterd throughout his journey.

When Ren caught up with the two, it seemed that Renji had noticed what went over Ren. It was good to know that the reason he was feeling awestruck was not due to him being isolated from the world. But because the place was just beautiful like that. When Renji mentioned what Ren might need, he could only think of three things: water, food and shelter. Those are the things that were always on his mind as he constantly move from place to place. Them being in a desert meant that Ren was not familiar on how to acquire those three needs. He only realised that it was a good thing that this Yuurei person was willing to take him to the guild. He could recover his energy and spend the night while he was there.

Then the question came, and Yuurei seemed to want to be polite. But Ren thought that it was okay. He knew a few things about the two, but they knew little about him.

”I am but a wandering man from the distant land of Joya.” he answered. When Ren thought about it, that seemed to be pretty much his entire identity.

As they kept walking, they were getting close to the guild hall. He figured he would show him this place before anything. The walk was a nice one, and it wasn’t bad even though it was somewhat quiet. While they moved through the area, Ren would answer Renji. The light mage would nod at the answer as they had someone from Joya in their midst. That was interesting and he had hung out in that area for quite some time.

“Interesting, you’re from Joya. How long did you stay in your home country?” He asked him.

He only asked this because he said he was a wandering man. It wouldn’t take long for the group to make it to the front of the guild hall building. Yuurei would open the door and he would allow Ren to enter first. When the man entered, they would be on the first floor and there they would see a bunch of Paradise Dawn members walking around, hanging out with each other, and doing other activities.

As they were in the area of Paradise Dawn, Ren would wander around with his eyes. Up close it seemed even more surreal to him. He had never been so close to such advance technology and civilisation. One might say that it could have been overwhelming to him, but he seemed to manage all the information quite well.

”Ten years,” he answered simply while his real attention were elsewhere.

They were in front of the door’s of the guild hall now, and Ren had yet know what the actual purpose of a guild is. The question rang again as the young ronin entered the place. The first thing Ren noticed were the noises. From chit-chatters, laughters, and many other different noises coming from the number of people that were there. As someone who was used to a place much quieter, this was truly overwhelming.
