“It must be around here somewhere…” Charlotte murmured to herself as her golden eyes scanned the scenery, “I doubt they would have lied to me…” She trailed off as she pushed some undergrowth out of her way and stepped into a small clearing causing her to sigh. No, this wasn’t right, the herbs she was looking for were said to only grow in the shade of trees, not in clearings. With another sigh she’d step out into it anyway, it seemed as good a place as any for a little rest from their search.

Beside her the small snow gryphon happily chirped, playfully batting at strange plants and flowers as Charlotte sat down to take a small breather, resting her back upon the trunk of a tree whilst stretching out her legs in the long grass. Perhaps it would be another fruitless day, they had heard word of there being a unique herb that grew only within this forest, yet here they were, their third day of searching to no avail. It was turning into a complete waste of time. Well, that was a bit of a stretch, they had discovered many strange plants and animals during the hours within the forest, it truly was a magical place, just not exactly what they were looking for.

Yuurei

A beautiful day and the duo was done with shopping in Magnolia for the time being. They had decided to stay away from people, which meant going to the forest would be for the best. He did miss his home in the North, and everything that had come with it. Still, he was in the East looking for mysterious pages that would help him for the future of Fiore.

Yuurei and Renji were on top of a tree branch that was thick enough to be able to hold their weight together. The Nephilim was laying down as he was enjoying the calmness that the forest. He could hear the animal sounds that were coming throughout the entire area. Renji was relaxed on the edge of the branch. He was looking around as if he were training his reflexes. He had been trying to get stronger to help out Yuurei with his future fights.

“Yuu, what are you doing?” He asked him.

“I’m just relaxing and enjoying my time. What are you doing?” He asked Renji.

“Training my eyes to make sure I can see things whenever you miss something.” He said to his friend.

A warm summer breeze blew through the forest as Charlotte finally returned to her feet to continue what was seeming to be a fruitless endeavour. As she walked through the clearing she noticed a certain chittering creature had become deadly quiet. An odd occurrence. One that usually did not bode well; An ill omen. Glancing back at her precious companion, she noted Gwendolyn appeared on edge, her fur and feathers all ruffled as if ready to fight whilst sniffing the air.

A strange scent on the air? Charlotte sniffed, but her regular human nose picked up nothing out of the ordinary, only the scents of the flowers and foliage. Charlotte went to take another step forward only to have Gwendolyn screech loudly at her as if shouting for her to halt. With a deep sigh, the young woman turned to look at her companion, folding her arms.

“What is it, Gwen?” She asked, her voice laced with irritation. It was then she heard it. A deep growl of a large creature behind her. Her body froze, as she slowly turned her head, eyes widening as her mind raced to identify the creature and if she should stay still or run as fast as she could. An oversized ape-looking creature, a forest Vulcan, stared at her as it tilted its head as if eyeing up its prey. They’d been fortunate to avoid one up until now and she knew all too well she wouldn’t be able to outrun the beast, nor was she sure she could defeat it in a fight. Her heart raced as she began to panic.

Yuurei

Yuurei would hear Renji, and when he knew he was just doing weird things, he would continue to relax. He was enjoying his day and wouldn’t let anything ruin it. Renji would keep looking around, and he wondered what he could spot from where he was. His eyes focused on the mark, and he would suddenly see a woman with hair close to Yuurei and a small cat-like creature on the ground. What truly made this unique was that they were being confronted by a Vulcan.

He would look back at Yuurei and then at the two that needed their help. He would rub the back of his head and figure it was time to say something.

“Yuu, there is a girl who might need your help. A Vulcan is moving toward her, and I don’t think it’s noticed your presence.” He said to Yuurei.

Yuurei would hear this and he would shake his head because that wasn’t what he would expect. He would get up from the branch he was on, and he would look in the direction that Renji was staring in. When he saw this, he would use his cape to fly toward the three of them, and he would land in between the woman and the Vulcan.

Yuurei would look at the Vulcan, and its eyes would widen when it felt the aura and mana coming from Yuurei. It would turn around and run away from the area. He would look over at the woman and he would have a smile on his face. She was a beautiful person and he figured he would ask if she was okay.

“Are you alright?” He asked her, as Renji made his way down the tree and ran to everyone.

Charlotte blinked a couple of times, unsure exactly what just happened. One second she was face to face with a forest Vulcan and then next a handsome young man was in its place. One she instantly recognised as one from many posters that hung in a certain young girl’s room back in the village she’d lived in. She was momentarily at a loss for words, she hadn’t expected anyone else to be this far into the forest, much less the most famous mage in Fiore.

“Ah, where are my manners?” She muttered as she finally realised she’d been silently staring for far too long, “I am completely unscathed, thanks to your assistance.” She bowed slightly to show respect, “I would have been in a terrible predicament had you not acted so swiftly, so I sincerely thank you.” She herself wasn’t entirely fantastic at sensing magical presences, however, Gwendolyn was. The gryphon stood stock still as if frozen with fear behind the young lady. Charlotte couldn’t necessarily blame her, she herself was finding this whole situation to be quite unreal.

Yuurei

Yuurei would look at the woman in front of him, and it would seem like she was lost for words for a few seconds. He would see that she knew who he was, and he had to give her a second. When she spoke, he would smile at her as if he didn’t mind the staring. It was something he was used to, and honestly, he was just glad that she didn’t ask for his signature or something.

Yuurei would hear what she had to say, and he would rub the back of his head. He did his best, and he was just glad that nobody was hurt here.

“No worries. I’m just glad that nobody got hurt here. I didn’t want to hurt the Vulcan, so I’m glad he left when he did.” He said to her as he figured that an introduction was only right.

Renji would make it to the group, and he would look at every one. Yuurei would see that Renji had finally made it.

“The name is Yuurei and this right here is my friend Renji. What about you two?” He said to her.

“I am also relieved that it was able to be dealt with in a non-violent manner.” Charlotte agreed, it was best if creatures didn’t have to be harmed, it was definitely her preference with these things. She had been half hoping she had been wrong, but the slim chance he was just some look-alike soon dissolved into nothing as he introduced himself. He was indeed the famous mage, known for his starlight magic and his heroic deeds.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, I only wish it was under more favourable conditions. I am Charlotte, and my companion here is...” She paused, turning to see Gwendolyn completely fluffed up into a ball of feathers and fur, trying to look big and threatening in an attempt to scare off the powerful mage. The sight caused Charlotte to sigh, “Gwen. I must apologise, she doesn’t do too well with strangers.” The gryphon tamer confessed, hoping he wouldn’t be offended by her weird aggressive behaviour.

Yuurei

Yuurei was glad to hear she didn’t want the Vulcan to get hurt. It wouldn’t take long for her to introduce herself to him and her companion. When they looked at her companion, it would seem like it was all puffed up and it was ready to pounce on Yuurei. He would chuckle at what she said, and he would smile at Gwen from what she had called her.

“It’s nice to meet you Charlotte and Gwen. What are you two doing out here?” He asked as he would look at Gwen

The light mage would smile at Gwen and would move over to the little girl. He knew what he was getting himself into. He had Renji and he had been scratched a few times by him at the beginning of their relationship. The Nephilim would be down as he would put his hand out to the creature without hesitating. He would wait to see what she would do, and he would do nothing bad to her whatever the outcome.

“It’s okay. I can understand how she feels. Still, I won’t do anything bad so no need to worry Gwen.” He said waiting to see what would happen.

"Ah, I was searching for a particular plant." Charlotte admitted sheepishly, it probably sounded like a dumb reason to be somewhere so dangerous, but the tamer had been confident that Gwen was enough to protect them both under most circumstances. Despite her tiny size, she packed quite the punch when she wanted to. The tamer looked on nervously as he approached the gryphon. Gwen eyed the stranger suspicious of him, still clearly agitated by his sudden appearance. Charlotte opened her mouth to speak out to be careful but was all too late as the critter lurched forward towards Yuurei's hand, sinking its beak in as best as it could in a snap before tightening its jaws even harder so it wouldn't be so easily released.

"GWEN NO!" Charlotte screamed, desperately going through her bag before pulling out some dried meat, "Let him go..." She knelt down, trying to entice the gryphon to release the young man in return for the food. The gryphon remained latched on for a brief second, giving Yuurei one last glare before finally letting go and hastily taking the meat from Charlotte. Gobbling it up in seconds. Shoving the gryphon to the side, Charlotte quickly grabbed mage's hand, looking it over to see if he was bleeding at all.

Yuurei

Yuurei would hear what she had said, and he wondered what kind of plant she was looking for. While this was happening, it would seem like Gwen was making her decision about Yuurei. It wouldn’t take long for Yuurei to be attacked by the gryphon. The Nephilim would feel the pain on his hand as he had been attacked. Renji’s eyes widen when he saw this, and he could only picture it now. Yuurei would die because he was trying to befriend a gryphon. He chuckled a bit, but at the same time, he wanted to help Yuurei.

The berserker had felt pain before, so he would just stare at Gwen as she was staring at him. It would seem like she wasn’t fond of him even after he stopped the Vulcan from attacking them. It wouldn’t take long for Charlotte to get Gwen off him. He would shake his hand a bit when the gryphon was off him, and he would feel that same hand being grabbed by Charlotte. He would let her check his hand and he had a smile on his face.

“It’s okay. She just doesn’t trust me is all.” He said to her as he wasn’t sure if he was bleeding or not either.

Charlotte sighed with relief, it seemed his hand was fine, other than some light scratches on the upper layers of skin. His rough, calloused hand was able to fend off Gwen's sharp beak, despite the little critter's best efforts. Charlotte was just thankful it was only a bite attempt and she hadn't used her whole body, her claws were razor sharp, more so than her beak.

"Gwen we've been over this, you're not to hurt people unless I command it." Charlotte turned as she reprimanded the gryphon who simply huffed as if she wasn't to blame. "Once again, I'm terribly sorry, it must have hurt, it doesn't look like she managed to cut you deep at least, but it might bruise..." She lowered her gaze, staring at the hand she was holding, unable to meet the famous mage in the eyes. He just rescued them, why couldn't Gwen be nicer?

"Oh my gosh, sorry, so sorry." Charlotte suddenly jerked her hands away, realising she hadn't let him go, a little flustered at her behaviour. What if he hated being touched? Today was looking to be one full of apologising.

Yuurei would see that his hand was fine, which he had expected. He was okay and he didn’t hold anything against Gwen for biting him. Still, he knew that next time he would have to give her something to eat before petting her. He was glad Charlotte had inspected his hand and saw nothing was wrong with it. He might have had a bruised hand, but it was something he was used to.

He would see her move her hand away from him and he would rub the back of his head.

“It’s okay, you were just checking to see if I had anything wrong with my hand. She’s a tough one though, isn’t she? I know next time bring something tasty for her to eat, so she doesn’t try and eat me.” He laughed when he said this.

He would look around and then remember that she was looking for a plant.

“What kind of plant are you looking for? Maybe I can help you out?” He asked her.

Charlotte was relieved that the man before her was taking everything in stride. He was incredibly kind to not get mad at Gwen for her behaviour. It made sense though, one didn’t become a popular mage among the general populace without showing sympathy and kidness. She nodded in agreement with the food thing, Gwen did tend to like people faster when they offered her food. The greedy little gryphon definitely had a slight food obsession.

“Oh um, only if you’re sure. I wouldn’t want to take up the precious time of someone like yourself. You must be busy with other things.” She paused, wanting to take him up on the offer, but not wanting to be any more of a burden than she’d already been, “However, I would greatly appreciate the help if you can afford to do so. Even if you can only provide any information. For example, if you happened to have seen it or have any idea where it would grow, I’d take pretty much any information on it at this point.” She added before delving into her bag and pulling out a sketchbook and pencil before she started to sketch out the plant while describing it to the best of her ability.

“It’s got reddish-purple flowers that look sort of similar to daisies however, it has sharp, spiked leaves, and thorns running down the vines. It tends to grow and leech off other trees.” She'd hand out the sketch towards him to view, it was a slim chance, but it was possible. It wasn't an overly large plant and it only grew in very specific conditions. She'd only had only seen the dried and shriveled version of it before back in her old herbalist master's house.

Renji would look at Yuurei and he would shake his head. Of course, he was going to ask if he could help them out. He was a sucker for girls alright unless they threatened his guild.

“If you’re going to help out with finding the plant Yuu, then I’m going to ride on your shoulder. Today was supposed to be a day where we relaxed.” He said as he would climb on Yuurei and placed himself on the man’s shoulder.

The duo would hear Charlotte’s words and he would rub the back of his head. They were not busy today. Yuurei would hear her explanation of the flower she was looking for. He would listen to everything she said about it, and how she described it. It wouldn’t take long until he saw a sketch of it, and he would rub his chin. He had traveled quite some time and he was knowledgeable about the forest within Fiore.

“I’ve seen this flower before. It was somewhere within the center of the forest. It’s usually found next to the big trees within the forest as its roots are what leeches the nutrients. I’m not an expert, but I did learn quite a bit back at home.” He said as he figured he would take the lead as he walked through the forest.

He would hope that she followed him, and he figured making conversations would be good enough to pass the time.

“So, where are you from Charlotte?” He asked her.

"Ah, up until recently I lived in a little no-named village in the mountains." Charlotte responded, "But now I live within Magnolia, so not far from here at all." She paused, curious about his own home given he had learnt about plants there. Perhaps his family appreciated nature as much as she did. Following behind him she'd call to Gwen to follow, who, albeit reluctantly, did as she was told whilst glaring into the back of Yuurei's head.

"What about yourself? You mentioned learning about nature back at home?" Charlotte asked before realising how intrusive that may have been for the famous mage, "Ah, I don't mean to pry, it's just, I've heard stories and rumours about you but not many pertain to where you came from before joining a guild, and those that do are often different every time. I don't think any of those theories mentioned you learning about plants." She hoped he didn't mind her asking, If he did he would no doubt skirt over the question much in the way she had.

Yuurei would hear where she had been living, but it would seem like she was residing within Magnolia now. The Nephilim kept moving as he wondered if she was a Fairy Tail mage. He was pretty sure she was, but he didn’t ask her. Instead, he would keep moving as she would ask him a question and then spoke a bit more before she waited for him to respond to her.

“I come from the Athalran forest. I’m half-elf, so I kind of grew up in nature my entire life. Now I live in the North of Fiore, but right now I’m looking for something because of some unknown danger that has hovered around this world.” He said to her as he kept walking through the forest with her Charlotte.

“Don’t worry about asking me any questions that you want. I’m fine with it no need to apologize for it.” He said to her.

Renji would look over at Gwen and he could see that the griffon was not happy with Yuurei even though he had saved her life.

Upon noticing the exceed staring in her direction, Gwendolyn shited its glare towards the feline, as if she was trying to urge Renji to fight her. Ready to throw down with him if he wished. The spunky little gryphon was more than willing to have a go despite all the circumstances simply because it was too proud to ever admit it was scared of the powerful mage.

Charlotte who had been carefully observing, and ignoring the situation up until this point, sighed as she picked up the hefty little critter and coddled her in her arms while whispering in a hush toned to the creature as she listened to Yuurei speak of his homeland. She had no idea he was a half-elf, then again famous mages had never really been something she had bothered to learn about, that had been her friend's hobby. It did, however, make a lot of sense, elves tended to be quite close to nature in general, more in tune with it than humanity was at least.

"I see... So you are in search of something too..." She muttered aloud, believing he was simply being kind so as not to ruin his image. Who would truly have no issue with their life pried into? What was concerning was the mention of some unknown danger. She had heard some rumours, but hadn't really fully grasped the situation, then again, she'd been too preoccupied with simply trying to make a living.

While Renji had looked at Gwen it would seem like the Gryphon was not happy with him looking at her. He would shake his head when he saw the bird staring at him hard. He would just look away as Gwen was grabbed by Charlotte. While they were walking, Yuurei would hear her speak and he would nod as he would look back at her. He figured he could tell her what it was while they were walking around to.

“Yes, I’m looking for something. There are these lost pages that I’ve read and learned about. If you could get your hand on any of them, you could find yourself stronger or having more jewels than you have at the moment. I’ve collected three of them, so they aren’t rumors.” He said to her as he would continue walking.

Renji would chuckle though because Yuurei was having a hard time finding one in the East Region of Fiore.

“You still looking for one in this region, but it seems like your lady’s luck has run out.” He said to Yuurei.

"Lost pages..." Charlotte murmured trailing off into her own thoughts, this was certainly something interesting sounding. Magical texts that gave someone power were just the sort of thing she herself could do with. Finding them, however, seemed like something near impossible for herself given someone as powerful as Yuurei had only managed to find three of them himself. Who knew how difficult they would be to locate?

Just as she was thinking this, the little orange exceed chirped up about how he was struggling since coming to the eastern part of Fiore. Charlotte felt her heart sink, there was definitely no way she'd ever discover one for herself in that case.

"Sounds like quite the little adventure. You've been through most of Fiore then?" she'd ask, fairly sure of the answer given how popular he was amongst citizens she'd met and the stories they had to tell about him. "I've always wanted to travel more." She sighed, knowing that doing so would put her freedom at risk if she wasn't careful.

Yuurei would hear her ask if she had been through most of Fiore. He had been around the entirety of Fiore a few times back. He would look at her with a smile on his face as he was glad that she asked.

“I have been through Fiore quite a few times. I’ve even traveled a bit in the other countries around Fiore. It is quite a nice scenery. If anything after I find the lost page here, you could come with me to the Central Fiore. That is the last place I couldn’t find a lost page. Hell, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a while for me to get it here.” He said to her.

He would keep moving through the forest as they were approaching the center of the forest soon. Yuurei and Renji would see a piece of paper flying through the air with a breeze passing by and it would slap Charlotte right on the face.

For the briefest of moments Charlotte's face twisted into a slightly horrified expression at the mention of 'Central Fiore' but was quickly replaced with a gentle smile. It was kind of him to offer to travel together, she would certainly be safer with him by her side, still, if they were to travel to that particular area, she would have to be extremely careful, a disguise would most certainly be necessary. If she were to meet someone she knew it could become a problem. Still, the opportunity to spend time alongside the most famous mage in Fiore was one she couldn't easily give up, even if it meant taking the risk.

"That is a kind offer, I may just take you up on it." She responded gleefully as she squeezed Gwen a little closer to her chest. A million thoughts on how she would need to be careful and not cause a scene, sticking to the shadows if they visited the capital and the like raced through her mind. The beaked creature nuzzled into Charlotte, clearly picking up on her anxious mood. The young woman smiled gently down at the gryphon before giving Yuurei her full attention again.

"So how much further in do you think it will be?" She asked curiously, strategically changing the subject while attempting to find out how long they would need to travel into the depths of the forestry to find the plant she was in search of.

Yuurei would hear what she had said, and he would have a smile on his face. He was glad that she was excited about this as they continued pushing forward. It wouldn’t take long, and it was funny that she would ask him that. He would rub the back of his head as he turned to look at her again.

“It should be around here actually. We actually just arrived at our destination, now all we have to do is look for the flower itself.” He said as the flower didn’t need the sun to blossom.

As long as its roots were latched on a tree, then it would be able to thrive without a problem. Renji would hear that they were there, and he would climb off Yuurei’s shoulder. He figured he would help them out.

The Nephilim would crack his neck as he started moving around the place.

“So, what do you need this flower for?” He asked curious to hear why she wanted the flower.

"Ah, well, depending on the part of the plant used, it has various properties for herbalism treatments." Charlotte began excitedly, happy to have someone listen to her prattle on about one of her biggest passions in life, "The flower can be used to help relieve rashes, and while I've heard it works best freshly picked, I've only sadly ever gotten to see it in use when dried due to living so far away. The stem, however, is best finely chopped and brewed in simmering water overnight and can be turned into a gel-like substance and the roots, well those can be used in tonics for colds and cases of flu, to help alleviate coughs and such." She chattered on whilst looking around happily in search of the plant, planning to take as much as she could without destroying the entire thing back with her. After all, it would be wise to let it continue to grow so she could harvest it again the following year perhaps.

She released the gryphon from her arms, letting her sniff about. It seemed she had calmed down, no longer annoyed with the strangers beside them, perhaps it had something to do with whatever Charlotte had whispered to it before. Or maybe it was simply too enthralled with the scents in the area to care.

Yuurei

Yuurei would hear her and he was surprised that the plant could be used to heal. It wouldn’t take long for her to explain more. When he heard her chatting, he would stop looking around and turn to look at her. He would nod while he was hearing her words. It would seem like she was indeed a healer or someone who enjoyed treating people to get better. It made sense that a flower that could take its nourishment from trees would be able to do something like that as take away the sickness of others.

“I see, so this flower would be able to leech away the sickness of others to make them feel better. I guess it is the same way it lives its life. I can only imagine too much of this flower in treatment could only be bad for the patient then.” He said as he thought about it being used as a type of poison.

He would continue to search for the flower though as he wasn’t sure how much of it, she needed.
