“I don’t understand. What are you expecting to find? Feels as though we’ve simply chosen to repeat history, or am I wrong?” The words of the homunculus merited little response from the woman, the doubt from her companion having been something that was as much to be expected, but not something that was to be much entertained. Regardless of reason, whatever the purpose of what or why their trip may have been, it did not change the fact that the creature would have followed her. It had no choice. Its existence was tied to her now, for the better and for the worst. And in reality, there were few things in which it had befallen them from a negative perspective. Their travels up to this point had been fortunate, if not wholly beneficial in their endeavors. Since arriving in Fiore, their travels had proven to be a worthwhile venture and even in this, an unexpected return to Dahlia, one of the first regions in which they had arrived within upon leaving Joya, there were plenty of reasons to believe that this trip would stand to be as much benefit.

Appearances certainly seemed that they would lend to a worthwhile time. The weather had begun to warm up, the indications that the rough winter that had plagued much of Fiore, if not much of Earthland, had begun to recede finally, giving way to a more enjoyable and much more welcome spring season. Though, as the calendar started to more and more lead towards the age of warmer weather, at times it certainly did not seem to seem as such. A cold tide rushed through the alleyways as the duo maneuvered through, looking for something of sort that they would be able to profit from, a contract in desperate need of being answered and resolved, a merchant whom had been wronged at some point, something at least that they would be able to reap the benefits of. Every so often, their efforts were interrupted by the cold ripple that blasted through, the unexpected chill causing her to revel in a slight shiver as the faint traces of the wind blowing past faded away, only to be lost to the warmer weather.

Time passed and less and less it seemed that the prospects were in their favor. Though she did not find too much worry in their predicament, her companion seemed far more worried, at least for having expected to not run into any sort of issue. Dahlia was hardly a place that was known for peace, known for any level of stability; it was a place that people like them would be able to thrive, behaving in an almost predatory nature towards these people who so desperately and so clearly felt the need to reach out to people like them. They were not from here, they never hid that fact, and yet it did not seem to bother those that lived within here. There was a scent in the air that was very apparent. Very easy for one who was looking to see if they were so inclined. Desperation. And this place, and its people, they all reeked of it.

“Should we perhaps reconsider things?” Her companion was clearly a bit concerned, and though she did not feel quite the same, she was able to understand at least from where she was coming from. Their plight once upon a time had felt those circumstances that they were so fearful of right now, and while she had overcome them, in part by luck, in part by her own overcoming of those adversities and some by perfectly manipulating them to her own benefit. They were challenges that she had faced, and now she had pushed herself into a position where she were able to enjoy the benefits of it all, the fears and worries that her travel companion felt currently no longer being something that she had to pay much mind towards.

“There’s no need,” she remarked, unphased by the worry that was becoming a bit more apparent towards in the homunculus’ voice. “All it takes is a lone fool for us to reap the benefits.” She turned towards the creature, “And if you were to think that the winter had taken with it all of the fools in the world, I would assume you to know better.”

It understood, though it still feared just what may have happened if their fortunes did not improve. Their fortunes had not faced such a plight like being without any source of wealth up to this point, though circumstances were different, if only slightly so. With the changing of the weather came a shift towards how the businesses within Fiore functioned. The inns and taverns that they would have once been able to reap the services of for a minimal fee, with the changing of the weather suddenly found themselves facing an unexpected, but much needed, boon in their intended customers and patrons. Dahlia was hardly a place that was going to experience such a huge boost like establishments in places such as Magnolia or others, but nonetheless it was a risk that existed.

If nothing else, the increased cost was going to be an issue that stood to present itself when they may have ventured to a different location within Fiore, as the increased business would surely mean that the prices there would be higher. To fail to establish funds now would put that much more of a sense of urgency upon the pair.

It took some time, far more than what either of them at this point would have preferred it to have taken, but sure enough they eventually found someone who were desperate enough to reach out to whomever it was that would be able to help them. Ironic enough, that person happened to be an innkeeper, struggling to find the means to secure and protect his business, enough people whom would look to try to reside at his establishment instead being turned away by the fear that they held for their own respective safety. Why stay at a place if it seemed that they were going to suffer and potentially lose everything, including their own life? Such risk made no sense, and there were no shortage of people whom had felt it more prudent to travel just a bit further than to stay there.

For the woman, it was not a concern, but the payment and compensation certainly was. The client knew this as well, offering both monetary rewards but also the chance to reside at his establishment at no cost. It was a worthwhile enough of a deal for her. And the task itself was hardly a thing that was concerning towards her. Some beasts, native to Dahlia and its immediate lands, but it was hardly the first time that she had dealt with their kind. She expected it would not be their last either.

They had walked the route before, at times wondering if they were to repeat the process again and again. She was frustrated, having wanted to rest her legs instead of maneuvering through decrepit alleyways that were hardly lacking for their own inherent dangers. Broken glass, jagged pieces of wood, other dangerous devices and contraptions that were lost to time. With each step that they took, a part of her could not help but look down, more fearful that she may have cut her flesh on an errant piece of metal than she were the creatures that she were expected to deal with.

“Think we’re close?” The companion asked, unsure as well as to what they were expected to find. It was certainly impressed if nothing else by the duality of their circumstances. As much struggling to find these creatures which so often were considered to be a plague upon the people of Dahlia, whilst also carrying the sense that they were right there, simply a step or two away throughout.

She turned towards the companion, the faint looks of a smile upon her lips, “We’ve been here for a while. Simply just needed a clearer venue.”

As though on cue, the creatures descended down upon them, several of them placing themselves enough to block off any means an escape. For some, it would spell out a death sentence, completely blocked off from any reliable means of escape, but she better. It were not about her or her companion being able to escape, but rather it was simply just ensuring that she knew what their approach was.

Know thy enemy.

Despite their pack tactics, creatures like this were seldom intimidating or otherwise worrisome. Their minds were simple, barely above that of the basic animal instincts that they possessed. Food was to be eaten, prey to be killed, predators to be avoided, and whatever were to cause pain was to be avoided if it could not be slain.

But how would one stand against the pain of their own minds? Could creatures of such a simple mentality even be able to recognize that sort of danger?

Doubtful, but she hoped that if nothing else, it would provide for a good show.

The first one barely was able to recognize what was going on before it were too late, cries of anguish echoing throughout the alleyway, the suddenness of it leaving its fellow creatures in a state of bewilderment and shock. As it fell to the ground, seemingly having had nothing affect it, they could not fully process it. Not until the blood began to pour out from its body, its ears, nose, and eyes jettisoning out a small pool of crimson liquid that caked the floor did they collectively manage to realize it was the doing of the woman, the golden rod evident in her hand.

One sought to lunge for her, only to stopped in its place, the same cries that had brutally scarred its companion now similarly afflicting it. No further effort was made on its part to try to stop the woman, who continued to hold the staff within her hands, the pain and agony evident on its face was only made worse in contrast to the look of sickening glee on that of the woman’s. It sought to erase the image of her smile from its mind, only after a desperate attempt at shutting and keeping shut its eyes that it was gifted the release of death.

There was a wicked sense of fortune that both happened to be on the same side of her, such when she turned her head to see the other two creatures that remained, all she had to convey was a wicked smile, indicating that they were next.

Nothing further was needed to be conveyed. Within seconds, the creatures departed, hastily making their way away from the woman and her companion in whatever manner suited them. The elegance and refined hunting tactics that had once been shown in their arrival was gone, thrown away in favor of basic animalistic survival. She could not help but chuckle slightly at the turning of affairs, the breakdown of these creatures, still arguably having had an equal footing in terms of their numbers and physical attributes, was something she couldn’t help but enjoy.

“I do enjoy that, don’t you? Animals. At the end of the day, that is all they are. Animals.”

Her companion said nothing, though agreeing with her in the sentiment, but not wanting to give the satisfaction of completely agreeing. To do that would be too easy. Giving the faint agreement of a nod, an acknowledgement at its simplest level, the woman said nothing further, simply accepting the concession and gesturing for them to return back towards the main part of the region, where an expected free room was awaiting them.
