The Sylvan Fay

Late Autumn, X795

The day following exams would have ordinarily been a day of rest, but for Atani, she decided to venture to the College of Obscuration for further study. Not something related to her coursework. Not something related to anything in particular really. She just often liked to explore the campuses in her free time. The number of hours she had spent in the libraries for the colleges of restoration and invocation were countless. This time, she figured it might be good to pay obscuration's a visit.

She loved visiting this part of campus. It often reminded her of her home, of Athalran. It was so beautifully rich in nature, and now that the season was well into fall and the leaves had taken on their warm, gorgeous hues, it felt that much more serene.

Atani had seen the library before in passing. She had even entered it once before, but never sat down to study.

This time, Atani intended to do more than just walk in and browse the books. Though beyond that, she admittedly didn't have much of a plan. All she knew was she wanted to diversify her interests, to find something that wasn't explicitly related to healing or spirits or transformations. Beyond that, nearly anything was fair game.

The College of Obscuration's library wasn't quite as vast as the others she frequented, but she honestly preferred it that way. It was quaint, cozy-- rather modest too for an 'academy.' Looking inside, she saw it was not too populated. Perhaps exams had just finished for the students at this college as well.

The interior of the library bore much resemblance to the rest of the structures this side of campus. All was made of wood, and greenery could be found around each and every corner. The bookshelves were stacked end-to-end, filled with plenty of material for her to research.

After a short period of time browsing the front of the library, just to see what was on immediate display, Atani found herself-- as usual-- drifting to the back of the room to examine the lesser seen shelves. One section was on animals, another on basic biology. Potentially intriguing, though the Wood Elf knew plenty on both subjects already.

She took a flight of spiral stairs leading to the second floor of the library. This section, she could tell, had already seen fewer students than the ground floor. The furniture was more scarce. What remained of it showed fewer signs of wear and tear than the furniture below. Atani ran her fingers along the bookshelves as she strode past. The wood felt cool and smooth. Several isles down, that feeling was interrupted by a brush of dust. Atani glanced at her fingers and rubbed the particulate matter between them before flicking it on the ground.

It appeared she had reached a rather unpopular section of the library. Curious, she turned to read what was on the plaque.

Gobennas.

Well, that explained the lack of popularity. Not only were these books in Val'Elvarin, but they were for a subject she imagined most students did not come to Amaforth to Study. Atani too was not much of a history buff herself, but she was intrigued by this section nonetheless. Maybe she would find these books were left untouched for a reason. Maybe she would find they were better than expected.

She stepped into the aisle. Like the shelf itself, many of the books' spines were covered in a thin layer of dust. There were a few, she could tell, that had been picked more recently: one regarding Athalran, another of Fiore, and a tome providing general coverage on Earthland. The rest were rather specific to certain geographic locations.

She was not interested in the more popular books. It wasn't that she felt she wouldn't learn anything from them, but the general premise disinterested her. Thus, she returned her focus to the rest of the bookshelf, hoping something else would pop out at her, and indeed 'something else' did.

It was rather innocuous at first glance. Subtle. Perhaps nothing more than the result of someone bumping into the bookshelf by mistake however long ago. But there was definitely a gap between books that was never resolved. Atani decided to take a peek. She pushed some books aside and saw that one had somehow fallen and was stuck between the shelf and its loose backing, though seeing how snugly it was caught, she on second thought couldn't imagine it had so easily 'fallen' like she originally assumed. Strange...

Pulling it free, she found that it too was covered in a thick layer of dust.

Atani blew gently on the cover. A cloud of smoke left the surface, and she batted her hand to disperse the rest. Arching her brow, she recognized the title to be written in Elvarin, not Val'Elvarin.

She supposed it could have been anyone's mistake to misshelve this, though she found it peculiar the subject was correct yet not the language. Someone surely would have to speak both to know where to place it, and yet it wound up here.

Thumbing through the pages, she could tell the book was old, but it was not well-read. Again, this made sense. It was rare enough she ran into someone who spoke the language of the Wood Elves, but Elvarin? This was most interesting indeed.

Atani took the book and found a seat among one of the few available places on the second floor. She looked at the title once more: Forostar... a tale of the northern lands, hmm?

What the elf had thought would be nothing more than a history lesson like any other soon evolved into something else entirely. After getting roughly thirty minutes into the book, things started to turn strange. She had thought her eyes were growing tired at first, for she couldn't quite make out a sentence; it seemed like nonsense, and as she stared at it, the tehtar seemingly curled, like the ink was moving on the page. She set the book down and rubbed her eyes. When she looked back, things were still once more... until they weren't. The tehtar began to move again, and this time she knew her eyes weren't playing a trick on her. She carefully watched as they moved across the page. The rest of the script began to follow suit until eventually, the entire nonsense passage was scrambled beyond recognition. In its place was something else entirely.

Better yet, it was something that made sense. The passage just before had been discussing an unnamed tribe of Wood Elves who, like many, hailed long ago from Elvhenair and gradually made their way up north. Only, the book never described which country they took settlement in, just that wherever it was, was frigid with snowy weather throughout most of the year. And according to the passage below, the one that had just been rearranged, they brought with them long forgotten mystic practices from Elvhenair. The words the book used... For a tribe of elves in an unknown location, the author of the book used very precise terms to describe their magic abilities.

She needed to know more. Taking the book in hand, Atani left the library in search of the professor who had been helping her at the College of Obscuration. Though they were only part Wood Elf, perhaps they still knew.

She arrived at their office door and gave it a firm knock. After a few moments of silence, she hoped she wasn't interrupting anything-- grading and the like since exams had just passed-- but soon enough the professor answered the door and greeted Atani with a warm smile.

"Atani, what brings you in today? I hope exams went well."

"They did, but that's not why I'm here. It's actually this." She presented the professor with the book. They gave it a once over and handed it back to Atani, a tad confused.

"A book on northern elves?"

"Yes, but it's more than that."

She opened to the passage where the tale regarding a particular tribe began. Though the professor could read it for themself, Atani aided the process by verbally sharing what she learned. As she did, she could see the gears begin to turn behind her elven professor's head.

"More than that indeed..." the professor murmured, a look of realization dawning upon their face. Once they got to the passage where the script began to change, their eyes lit up, enraptured by the enchantment. "Fascinating..."

She was lucky to know someone on campus who knew the language-- perhaps not as well as she, but to the degree where it could be read? That was all she needed.

"Where did you find this?" the professor finally asked.

"Just at the library." Tucked away on a shelf nobody had touched in ages, wedged in a spot out of sight, but she didn't need to bore the half-elf with the details.

"Really? Hmm..." The professor poured over the book some more, examining its pages thoroughly. They held a hand over the one singular magic page, letting it emanate a subtle golden glow. The book didn't appear to be altered by the spell.

Though she didn't think the professor had alterations in mind when they cast it.

After several minutes of conversation and deliberation, the professor concluded the book was very much real. They mentioned they had heard stories of these northern elves before, but this was the first time a piece of literature personally attested to their existence. The fact there was a hidden message, however, was very peculiar, almost as if it wanted an elf and only an elf to be capable of deciphering it.

Atani asked if it was possible this tribe could help her condition. She had tried by herself. She had tried with Elioriel. She had tried with the Academy. They helped, but they weren't a solution. The professor conceded it may very well be possible, particularly given its origins in Elvhenair, but it was impossible to be certain lest someone made the voyage and asked the elves directly.

Atani was willing to try anything at this point. She expressed her desire to go on this voyage herself, to which the professor found to be quite sudden. They expressed she still had much to learn from the Academy, how her classes were not yet even over. She of course understood this and was willing to finish up whatever coursework she had, but for some reason, she was feeling particularly strong about this. Eventually the professor agreed, even saying they could vouch for her if she wanted to turn this into a 'study abroad' program. Considering the Rune Knights periodically asked for updates on their in-class trainees, that was probably a good idea.

Early Winter, X795

She spent the rest of the semester doing exactly what she needed. She finished up her coursework as early as the Academy would let her, including all necessary exams. All the while, she prepared for her journey, and by the end of the year, she was ready to embark.
