”You sure know how to treat a hero” Kenzo commented with a gleeful look on his face as he counted the jewels that now rested on his hand. The large bag Nelson had given him was overflowing with coins; this had been one of the most profitable jobs for the mercenary as far as he could remember. He needed to check how inflation had hit the country though, it had been way too long since he’d last bought anything significant, so maybe the currency had devalued that much.

Regardless, the man was happy, just as his companion from the looks of it. Merry snacked on a piece of fresh fish on the corner, completely content with that being his entire reward for the quest. The two of them had sailed to defeat a pirate crew, and the mission had been a complete success. However, there was always space for more.

”Hope you’re in the mood for more Kenzo. The boys at the dungeons tell me this seems to be only the beginning.” Nelson spoke with a heavy voice, letting out a sigh that let the mercenary understand the gravity of his words.

Raising a curious eyebrow, the blue-haired Bellan warrior lifted his head from the reward and turned to face the commodore. ”They sure are quick. We haven’t even been here for an hour” The man understood perfectly what the marine meant even if he didn’t explicitly state it. It had been part of their arrangement after all. It was of utmost importance that Kenzo brought back part of the pirate crew alive, since the royal navy needed someone to interrogate. Still, the warrior was surprised to learn that the marines had been able to get useful information out of a poor devil so fast. ”What did your guys learn?”

”The pirate crews of he seven seas are growing restless. The death of the Pirate Queen has been vacant for far too long. Her territories have been completely scattered, and her treasures are still to be unfound.” Nelson explained solemnly as he stood of from his chair, making his way towards the window and crossing his hands behind his back.

Kenzo perked his ears as he attentively waited for the marine to continue, ignoring the munching sounds that Merry made as he tore a piece of the small fish. ”A race for the throne is upon us. The warlords of the sea have prepared for war; I guess it’s of no surprise after all. There are rumors that the deathbed of the Pirate Queen was found.”

A knot formed at the pit of Kenzo’s stomach, he could imagine where this was going. ”Of all damn places! She died in Hargeon”

The mercenary could feel Nelson’s mood sour, but he knew better than to speak his mind. He already felt bad enough knowing that the guy had lost his leg due to his fault. Now that apparently a war was brewing in the horizon for the remains of Cheng Shih’s treasure fleet, there was no way Kenzo was revealing he’d been the one to destroy it.

”What’s the situation looking like?” Kenzo interjected, swallowing a piece of saliva, trying to put on a serious tone.

”It seems like this years of fighting have finally settled the ranking of the seas. A new Pirate King will be born.” Kenzo nodded as Nelson shot a serious look at him, understanding where he was going. ”The strongest have gathered under 12 pirate banners. They call the strongest of them the 4 emperors of the seas. The rest are known as the eight great warlords”

A surge of excitement rushed through Kenzo at the thought of the battles to come. A battle junkie through and through, the warrior could practically taste the wealth that the royal navy was prepared to offer. True, he was a member of Blue Pegasus, but that didn’t mean he had suddenly become a pushover when it came to negotiating his pay. Clearing up his throat, the warrior stood up from the table, making his way to the free spot next to Nelson.

Crossing his hands behind him just like the navy officer, Kenzo looked at the view from the window. ”It’s gonna cost you, you know?” The warrior wore a complicated expression, the kind one wore when he couldn’t see an exit to a problem. Of course, this was all part of his negotiating expertise. ”I’m not sure even your new post could muster such an amount” Kenzo finished seriously.

”Hah. It’s always simple with you” Nelson added with a heavy chuckle, straining his eyes as he tried to focus far into the horizon. ”I’ll give you a fifth of what we confiscate” The man spoke without looking at Kenzo.

”Hah! I’d be better buying a raft and going against them on my own then.” The warrior replied with a confident tone. It was the kind of tone with which you couldn’t tell if the person was being serious or simply bluffing. Part of Kenzo’s secret was that he didn’t even know himself if he was.

Yet, it seemed that this new tactic had worked wonders on Nelson, his expression twisting into an internal battle. Finally after what seemed like an eternity, he agreed. ”Half. And you’ll always have a crew of my choosing to supervise the operations.”

”Got you” Kenzo thought to himself as he shook Nelson’s arm vigorously.

Merry and Kenzo left the commodore’s office shortly after the deal between the two was finalized. They had a lot of work to do. From what Nelson had learned during the interrogation, it appeared that the hideout they had busted just recently was part of the first warlord’s territory. There were words of danger going around, saying that the warlord wouldn’t let things slide. In Kenzo’s mind, this made no difference though. After all, he’d just become the temporary owner of his new fortune.

Making their way back to the ship of the line, Kenzo was introduced to the crew captain. The course had been charted, directing them to the location of yet another hideout. The Blue Pegasi boarded as soon as the preparations were done, ready to bust some more pirate ass.

Looking through the starboard rail, Kenzo couldn’t help but remember the times he went fishing with Noel.

”We’re under attack!!” the sentries screamed as a barrage of cannonballs flew through the air, whooshing mere inches away from the masts or landing just short of the large vessel and into the sea. The ship rocked violently at the rippling effect of the attacks, shaking Kenzo off his feet. Merry had stayed inside their cabin, considering he didn’t fare well in humid places. As Kenzo made his way up the deck, he quickly took notice of their enemies.

There were 2 large ships within firing range, black flags hoisted high above their poles. The had the same symbol as the ones in the hideout they’d busted before. Seems like their prey had come without them needing to weed them out.

An evil smirk grew on Kenzo’s lips, roaring him up for battle. As the ship’s crew ran around in confusion as they tried to man their battle positions, Kenzo jumped over the deck and onto the railing before propelling himself into the sea. Any outsider that saw him would have believed him to have thrown himself off, but that was far from what he intended. In an instant, a bright light materialized out of nowhere and summoned Kenzo’s flying cape, lifting him high up in the air.

The battle lasted for hours, until eventually a victor had been decided. Kenzo had managed to completely capture the 2 vessels, incapacitating most of the crew and securing their explosive cargo so they couldn’t blow themselves up in retaliation. Most importantly, he’d learned a vital piece of information.

Buried within a secret compartment in the captain’s cabin, a map had been hidden in a hurry. Kenzo smiled at his luck. He now held a map pointing to the first warlord’s hideout.
