The Sylvan Fay

Late Summer, X795

It crossed her mind that she could have just used one of the Council's teleportation devices to reach the island home to Amaforth Academy, but she much preferred this route. Though more time consuming, she had wanted to visit Caelum for quite some time, if not for her past then at least to experience another foreign land. As far as her past went though (or what little she could remember of it) she experienced a strange sensation upon setting foot on land. Not quite déjà vu, but something akin to it. She knew she had never seen Caelum before, but it was as if she had heard of it in intimate detail-- something that went beyond what she read in books. Unfortunately, however, she could not stay long to figure out what it meant, for nearly as soon as she landed ashore, it was time for her to depart to Amaforth.

The boat ride may have been the shortest part of the trip, as it really was only to an island off the coast of Caelum, but it was by far the most nauseating. The elf rarely had motion sickness, but when it came to ships for whatever reason, it became much worse.

On a biological level she supposed it made sense. She was a Wood Elf, not a Water Elf, and these overseas trips frequently reminded her of such. "I really need to learn a spell for this," she muttered to herself as she leaned against the railing, hoping the saltwater breeze would quell some of her nausea.

"I knew one years back," chimed Yuan from within her mind. "I'm sure it can be transferred to you. But since you refuse to learn my spells..."

"It's just for now. Amaforth is supposed to help us both."

She heard a slight hmm come from Yuan.

Not a judgemental hmm or a skeptical hmm, but one that sounded rather neutral-- not an unusual response from Yuan, but she was a little surprised the goddess had no other thoughts on the matter. Perhaps it was the inevitability of it. Atani was taking them both to Amaforth, that much was certain. The Rune Knights were hopeful the scholars and professors there would be able to help her. That much she was hopeful about, though there was always the possibility of it failing.

They had a unique situation. Take-Over magics were nothing new. People embodied the spirits of gods, demons, and beasts alike, many with virtually no issue. There were very few souls, however, that were ripped from the Void, that had become corrupted by the Void. Thinking of that word, corruption, she could tell it caused Yuan to stir. She was still very bitter about being trapped in there for so long.

As soon as she was freed from that wretched place, she found herself stuck in another prison: Atani's body. Much nicer than the Void, of course, but it was still a prison nonetheless. Yuan had every reason to be bitter. Atani understood that. But she couldn't let herself go just so Yuan could be free. They would have to find some sort of balance, but finding that balance was going to be difficult, especially when Mórinna remained a dormant threat.

Mórinna... Gods, she was a whole other problem. Atani only had a couple doubts regarding the Academy's expertise in her unique brand of Take-Over magic, but the Ëalar? Not even the sages of Athalran were able to help her with that one. The closest she had come was that ablution and that still remained a total blank. She was sure it was the root of her amnesia, but all her research into it was gone.

Perhaps the Academy could help with that? Surely there had to be at least one scholar who was an expert on amnesia and the mind. But she was getting ahead of herself. She would find all this out sooner or later once the ship actually docked.

Upon arrival, Atani was relieved to be standing on solid ground again. Though her stomach still churned, she could tell it had already begun to settle, and soon enough she would be right as rain. Speaking of which... the elf looked to the sky. Gray clouds had begun to roll in. If she wanted to escape the weather, now was a good time as ever to find the admission's office.

The signage was fairly easy to follow. In no time at all, she had found the appropriate office, and not a moment too soon. As she entered through the double doors, a drizzle had begun to fall.

The building opened up to a room of modest size. A receptionist sat at a wooden desk just ahead of her. Papers in hand, Atani approached the woman.

"Hello, I'm here to enroll," she said, presenting her small stack of paper so that the woman could see. After giving it a quick glance, she showed Atani to a set of benches where she could wait for someone to come out. Given the Academy's relationship with the Magic Council and her being a Rune Knight, the process was slightly different, particularly since she didn't choose to come to Amaforth, but rather it was built into her... training program, you could call it.

She wasn't exactly ordered to come, but after talking with her superiors, they agreed there had to be at least something reliable to get her back on track, and unfortunately her own personal (non-existent) 'training regimen' wouldn't cut it.

It wasn't long before her name was called. She got up from her seat and followed a man to the back. As he took a spot behind his desk, she did the same in front.

"So, Atani Tathvir," the man began as he scanned the papers. "You're a Rune Knight... a Captain by the looks of it." He looked at her skeptically. "Most students we receive from them are rather new-- privates or trainees."

"Yes, well... My situation is-- "

"Oh, I see." The man furrowed his brows as he read through her papers. Atani found herself sitting straighter, shifting in place with unease. He poured over the notes. She had read them herself; they described in brief her situation and how she had developed a sudden lack of control for her magic. It did not, however, delve too deep into the exact nature of it, including where her goddess soul had come from.

"Well, we have many scholars here who are very well-versed in transformation magic. Most belong to the College of Destruction if you would like to hear of it."

"Actually, my focus is more on healing." This elicited a surprised expression from the man, but she didn't blame him. It was rather unusual for a Take-Over mage to specialize in healing of all things. It was even stranger for someone to ask for help rein in powers that were otherwise used for good.

"So you desire our help because your healing is out of control?"

"It's... a bit more complicated than that, but in a sense, yes."

She went on to explain her situation further. Though she did not mention Yuan's soul came from the Void, she did mention the dual effect her supposed 'healing' spells had. For years now, they came with the ability to hurt those she deemed a threat.

That, in and of itself, was not a problem. It may have been years ago when it first happened, but she had long since mastered that aspect of her magic. No, this time, the fact Yuan's conscience could invade hers, it warped what she perceived as an ally and what she perceived as a threat. Even if she was so certain that she, as Atani, was in control, sometimes the tiniest bit of Yuan could seep through, and she would end up harming someone she was trying to heal-- and that was while she was supposedly in control. That didn't even take into account the times where Yuan would front in full.

Hearing her explain this, the man slowly nodded his head. He pressed his hands together in contemplation.

"The College of Restoration would most definitely be able to help with a good portion of that."

"Those were my thoughts as well."

"But--" Aaand there it was. She was sensing there would be a 'but.' "-- Someone from the College of Destruction may be more suited for your unique type of transformation magic. It's up to you which school you wish to enroll in."

"The College of Restoration, please."

She had already made up her mind on which college to join before even arriving at Amaforth Academy. While this administrator may have voiced hesitation on the healing college's specialty in Take-Over magic, she was sure their techniques for control would translate well. If it was one thing she learned in her years upon years of experience as a medic, control was everything. She had a feeling the scholars knew this as well.

"Excellent, then I will take these papers from you and begin processions. Welcome to Amaforth Academy, Miss Tathvir. I hope our College of Restoration will suit your needs."

Atani thanked the man and headed out the door. Now, onto campus…
